Zinnia paused for a moment, then nodded. “Alright. I’ll be there on time.”

Landon finally exhaled, the tension in his smile easing as relief washed over him.

“Well… I’ll get going, then.”

“Okay. See you.”

Monday came before they knew it.

As usual, Landon arrived right on time to pick up Dapper for work. Neither of them mentioned the incident in Norway—they seemed to share an unspoken agreement to leave it buried. Landon didn’t dare bring it up in front of Zinnia, and she didn’t see the point. In her mind, with the divorce looming, there was no sense in clinging to the past.

Once Dapper had left with Landon, Zinnia headed off to her shift at the hospital.

She’d barely made it to her department when a colleague called out, “Dr. Quinn, the dean wants to see you in his office.”

“Oh, alright.”

A few minutes later, Zinnia knocked on the door to Professor Zephyr’s office.

“Professor, you wanted to see me?”

“Yes, come in, Zinnia.”

Zephyr set aside his paperwork and waved her over. “Here’s the situation. A few senior professors from the medical school are going abroad for an academic exchange. The university asked me to recommend someone to cover their classes for a while. After some thought, I realized you’re the perfect fit.”

Zinnia blinked, a little surprised. “You want me to teach at Veridian University?”

“That’s right. You’ll be covering some clinical courses for the time being. In a few days, one of my other students will be returning from overseas—he’s taking up a lecturer’s post at Veridian’s medical faculty. You’re both my students, so you’ll be able to look out for each other.”

She considered it, then nodded. The new arrangement would give her more flexibility, which meant she could handle Dapper’s care herself instead of relying on Landon.

“Of course, I’m happy to do it.”
