Landon was momentarily stunned.
This was the first time he’d ever seen Zinnia like this.
Usually, Zinnia went without makeup—her face always fresh and natural. But her fair skin and delicate features meant she never needed anything extra to stand out. Even without a trace of makeup, she was striking.
But tonight, for the first time, Landon finally understood those old tales of foolish kings who would stop in their tracks, spellbound by a beautiful woman. He understood why men would risk everything, betray the world, just for one smile from such a beauty. Why they’d light a fire just to amuse her, consequences be damned.
His wife was breathtaking.
Zinnia grew a little uncomfortable under Landon’s gaze. She deliberately made a bit of noise, snapping him out of his trance.
Meanwhile, the stylist—who had no clue that Landon and Zinnia were on the verge of divorce—was still gushing over them, absolutely effusive with praise. She seemed to be piling on every compliment she’d ever learned, stringing together the most flowery words imaginable.
Finally, she wrapped it all up with a flourish:
“Mr. and Mrs. Ford, you’re the perfect couple! When you walk into that gala tonight, you’ll look like leads from a romance drama—no, scratch that, even those actors couldn’t compare to the two of you.”
Zinnia blinked, a bit embarrassed by the overflowing praise. She wanted to interrupt, but didn’t want to seem rude.
Landon, on the other hand, was clearly enjoying it. He couldn’t stop the smile tugging at his lips.
Once the stylist left, the living room was quiet again, except for Dapper, who was happily playing by himself. It was just Landon and Zinnia now.
With no one else around, Landon felt suddenly awkward in Zinnia’s presence. He found himself rubbing his palms together, only to realize they were slick with cold sweat—when had that happened?
