Zinnia stood frozen in place, trembling uncontrollably.
“Zinnia.”
Zoey had appeared at her side without her noticing, her voice soft and careful.
Slowly, Zinnia lifted her head. Her eyes were bloodshot with rage and pain.
She unclenched her fists, only now realizing how tightly she’d been gripping them, so hard her fingertips had gone numb.
She looked at Zoey, trying to force a smile, but after several attempts, her lips simply wouldn’t cooperate.
Her voice shook. “I trusted him again, didn’t I?”
She tried to sound upbeat, tried to keep her words light for Zoey, but her voice trembled with every syllable.
“Tell me, why… why am I so stupid? Just because he was a little nicer to Dapper, I let my guard down. I actually thought it was safe to leave Dapper with him.”
She forced her lips into what might have been a smile, but tears were already welling in her eyes.
Zoey’s heart ached at the sight. She stepped forward and wrapped Zinnia in a gentle hug. “You don’t have to pretend to smile. This isn’t your fault—it’s Landon’s. He’s just a master manipulator.”
When she’d come looking for Zinnia earlier, she’d happened to overhear Noelle boasting about how Dapper had really ended up in that storm drain.
They both knew that someone with serious connections had been helping the creep who hurt Dapper. But they never imagined it would be Landon—cleaning up Rosalie’s mess, going so far as to wipe every trace of the video from the entire internet.
Not just Twitter. Everywhere.
That would cost a fortune, and it would take real power and influence.
But then again, in Veridian City, there were only a handful of people with that kind of reach.
Zinnia stayed silent, holding onto Zoey as her emotions slowly settled.
