Zinnia glanced down at her pinky finger.
The knuckle was badly swollen, pulsing with a dull ache. She’d barely noticed the pain until now, her anger having drowned out everything else. But with Landon’s words, her awareness returned to the throbbing finger.
She remembered then—she’d hurt it blocking Noelle’s purse, the heavy metal buckle slamming right into the bone.
Zinnia shot Landon an icy look. The chill in her eyes made him instinctively let go of her hand, but his voice remained hoarse as he asked, “Did Noelle do this?”
He stared at her, searching her stone-cold expression.
Her hand froze mid-motion as she tried to unlock her phone. So Noelle hadn’t wasted the chance to run and tattle.
A mocking smile tugged at Zinnia’s lips as she met his gaze. “Yes, it was her. She came to warn me—told me I should hurry up and divorce you, make room for her.”
Her eyes grew even colder. “Landon, I have a lot on my plate. I don’t have the time or energy to deal with Noelle’s drama. Maybe you should keep her in check.”
Panic flashed across Landon’s face as he stumbled over his words. “I didn’t know she’d come see you.”
Zinnia’s indifference made him flounder even more, struggling to find any defense. All he managed was a desperate plea: “I’ve already stopped talking to her, I swear. I had no idea she’d go to you.”
His mouth twisted into a strained, ugly smile. “Please… Don’t look at me like that, okay?”
Zinnia dropped her gaze, silent for a moment before looking up again. “But Noelle keeps coming after me because of you. If you hadn’t encouraged her, she wouldn’t dare.”
