He signed his name and glanced at his phone—still no reply from Zinnia.

A hint of restlessness crept into his gaze.

“Let’s just wait a little longer. Maybe Zinnia’s already on her way home,” Arrow said, trying to reassure him as Landon’s expression grew more and more tense.

Just then, the doorbell rang again.

“See? I told you—Zinnia’s here!” Connor said, hurrying off to open the door.

Landon’s attention snapped to the entryway, hope flickering in his eyes.

“Hello, I have a birthday cake delivery for Mr. Morrison. Could you please sign for it?”

Chandler, who had been lounging on the couch fiddling with his phone, stood up at the sound of the delivery.

“Yep, that’s the one I ordered,” he said, crossing the room. He signed for the cake and carried it inside.

Seeing the fresh wave of disappointment on Landon’s face, Chandler tried to cheer him up. “Don’t worry. Just give it a bit more time. Maybe she got caught up with something else. She was supposed to be on call today, remember? Swapped shifts with Zoey a few days ago—probably just so she could celebrate your birthday.”

Landon’s eyes, previously dull, brightened at that.

“Really?” The corners of his mouth, which had been turned down, lifted ever so slightly.

“Oh!” Arrow suddenly slapped his own forehead. “How could I forget?”

He scooted closer to Landon. “Yesterday, Zinnia actually stopped by my shop and ordered a custom fountain pen—she even asked to have ‘Ford’ engraved on it. It’s for your birthday.”

“She really went to get a pen made for me yesterday?” Landon couldn’t hide his delight, though he tried to play it cool. His eyelids lifted just enough to catch Arrow’s gaze, that barely-contained excitement making him look almost comically serious.

“I wouldn’t dare lie to you, Landon. I was in the shop the whole time—heard Zinnia tell the staff to engrave ‘Ford’ right on the pen. Who else would she be giving that to if not you?”
