Zephyr let out a sigh. “But Zinnia is now the Ford family’s daughter-in-law.”
Yuri didn’t reply. He narrowed his eyes, quietly repeating Zephyr’s words under his breath: “The Ford family’s daughter-in-law…”
His voice was soft, almost wistful, just enough for Zephyr to catch. Zephyr glanced over, gave Yuri’s shoulder a gentle pat, and said, “You need to take it easy. Don’t do anything rash. Even if things aren’t going well between Zinnia and Landon, they’re still married. Don’t risk ruining her reputation.”
At those words, Yuri slowly drew his gaze back from the distance and fixed it on Zephyr’s face. He smiled. “Professor, the Fords are your old friends, and I’m your student. Don’t tell me you’re playing favorites.”
“You little brat!” Zephyr barked, giving Yuri a light punch on the arm. “I wanted to introduce you to her back then, remember? But you insisted on leaving the country. I couldn’t exactly have Zinnia follow you abroad, could I? Even if she agreed, her parents never would have.”
“If you’d just stayed home, Landon wouldn’t have even had a chance.”
Yuri frowned but said nothing.
Some things, when the timing is wrong, the outcome will never be right.
Back then, all she saw was Landon. She’d even skipped grades just to be closer to him. How could he possibly compete with that?
If marrying Landon was what she wanted—if Landon could’ve truly cherished her—then what right did Yuri have to interfere?
But who could have guessed Landon would leave her stranded and alone in that freezing wasteland? The moment Yuri saw her being carried out of the ambulance, his rage at Landon was so fierce, he could have killed him then and there.
How could Landon just abandon her like that?
And later, when Yuri learned Landon had done it all for some woman named Jensen, regret gnawed at him. He shouldn’t have let go so easily. He should have fought harder, should have tried to win her over.
If it was so easy for Landon to have her, why couldn’t Yuri have tried just as hard?
“But you know,” Zephyr said, breaking the heavy silence, “it’s not like you’re out of chances now.”
“Zinnia’s not going to give Landon another shot. Don’t rush into anything, though. At least wait until she divorces him.”
