“Forget it, Zinnia. Stop pushing Mr. Ford.”
Yuri broke the silence, glancing at Landon as he spoke. “Sure, I saved your life, but that was my duty—and my choice. I have no right to hold that over your head, and even less right to guilt-trip Mr. Ford. After all…”
He paused, that mocking smile on his lips deepening.
“After all, even if someone saves your life, it’s your debt to repay. What has that got to do with your spouse? Don’t you think so, Mr. Ford?”
As the words hung in the air, Landon’s expression grew even darker.
Yuri sounded like he was defending him, but every word dripped with sarcasm. Landon could hear it clearly—Yuri was mocking him, rubbing salt in the wound that even after repaying Noelle for saving his life, he had to drag his wife into it too.
Landon just stood there, stunned into silence, fists clenching tighter and tighter at his sides.
Zinnia, sensing things were only going to get worse, cut in before the argument could escalate. “Let’s go, Yuri. You have class this afternoon.”
“Alright.”
Yuri nodded, the smile never fading from his lips. “I’ll head out then, Mr. Ford. Hopefully, next time we meet, I’ll be able to greet you as… a senior.”
Zinnia didn’t quite catch the meaning behind Yuri’s “senior,” but Landon understood instantly. Maybe it was just a man’s sixth sense—or that instinctive possessiveness—but he could see right through Yuri’s intentions toward Zinnia.
There was a challenge in that “senior,” clear as day.
A cold, dangerous light flickered in Landon’s eyes.
Yuri tossed out his parting shot and made to leave with Zinnia.
