Noelle immediately caught the subtext in Juniper’s words.

Her eyes went wide with disbelief as she stared at him, her voice ringing out shrill and sharp:

“Dad, you’re really going to throw me to the wolves just to win Landon’s favor? Don’t forget, if I hadn’t saved his life, Infinity Structures Inc. would be nothing! How can you even think about using me as a bargaining chip?”

Smack!

Another slap landed across Noelle’s face.

Juniper was livid. The blow wasn’t light—her head snapped to the side, and even her surgically sculpted nose looked crooked now, making her face almost comical.

“Don’t you forget,” Juniper spat, “that so-called act of heroism cost me two hundred grand. If I’d known you’d turn out this useless, I would’ve used that money to save your brother instead.”

Noelle was beyond furious now.

“Oh? Regretting your choice? You really think I don’t know why you made me the ‘hero’? You just wanted to use this as an excuse to marry me into the Ford family! What, you want my brother to take my place—what, let him sell himself?”

Juniper sputtered, clutching his chest as if about to have a heart attack.

“You—You—”

He had to catch his breath for a long moment before pointing a trembling finger at Noelle and cursing,

“That’s right! I planned it that way. But you’re such a hopeless case that even with this connection, Landon still wants nothing to do with you!”

That hit Noelle right where it hurt.

Screaming, she grabbed whatever she could get her hands on from the coffee table and hurled it at Juniper, striking him squarely on the forehead and leaving a long, bloody gash.

Juniper finally collapsed onto the sofa in a fit of rage, too exhausted even to yell back.

“Go ahead, keep acting crazy. Maybe you’ll get lucky and be declared insane—could save you from jail. I’m done with you. Handle your own mess.”

He waved her off feebly, looking totally deflated, like a balloon with all the air let out. He slumped back into the couch, unresponsive.

Seeing this, Noelle panicked.
