Zane shut his eyes, his eyelids trembling violently.

“It wasn’t me.”

When he opened his eyes again, his gaze was steady and unwavering, fixed on Yuri. “I told your mother a long time ago—your father’s death had nothing to do with me. But she’d rather cut ties with me than believe a word I said.”

Yuri let out a sharp, bitter laugh. “Who are you trying to fool? My father was a nobody, just a street punk. Who could he have possibly angered to deserve that kind of brutal end—beaten to death and dumped at sea?”

She leaned forward, her eyes burning with crimson hatred. “How convenient that the people you sent after him showed up, and then he just turned up dead. Isn’t that quite the coincidence?”

She went on, voice trembling with rage. “For someone with your reputation, you can’t even admit to what you’ve done?”

Yale, who had been silent until now, scowled and spoke up, his tone low and heavy.

“You’re just like your mother. No matter how many times Zane explains it to you, you refuse to listen. You only ever believe what you want to believe.”

Landon stepped over to Zane’s side, murmured a few words of comfort, and signaled for Yale to take Zane out of the room.

Then he turned back to Yuri, whose eyes still brimmed with hatred.

“I don’t know who you think you’re fooling,” Landon said, voice cool. “If Grandfather really did have something to do with your father’s death, it wouldn’t matter whether he admitted it or not. What could you do to him? Why would he bother denying it? Maybe deep down, you already know the truth—you just can’t bring yourself to accept it.”

He shrugged. “Either way, if your mother wants to come back and see Grandfather, the Ford family will always welcome her. If she doesn’t, if she wants to keep holding onto her grudge, that’s her choice. Grandfather has gotten by for all these years, with or without her.”

But then Landon’s gaze turned sharp, and his eyes settled coldly on Yuri.
