Landon stood frozen, blindsided. He hadn’t expected that Zinnia had called him over just to ask him to finalize the divorce papers.
He’d hurried over, heart pounding with anticipation—only to have Zinnia douse his hopes with a bucket of icy water.
“So you asked me here… just to get the divorce paperwork done?” His voice sounded hoarse and brittle, the sorrow in his eyes threatening to spill over.
Zinnia nodded. Remembering how much she’d relied on Landon these past few days, she softened her tone, trying to sound less distant. “Thank you for everything you’ve done for my family and me recently. I really appreciate it.”
Hearing her polite, measured words, Landon’s reply came rough and strained: “You don’t have to thank me. It was the least I could do.”
He forced himself to tamp down his disappointment, then said quietly, “Well… let’s get going, then.”
Zinnia nodded again, and together they left the hospital.
This time, Zinnia didn’t protest or try to be polite—she simply got into Landon’s car, and they drove straight to the county clerk’s office.
The divorce process went quickly, almost too easily.
When they emerged from the building, divorce certificates in hand, Zinnia let out a long, shaky breath.
Landon had been silent through the entire ordeal, looking more defeated with every passing minute.
“Zinnia.” He called her name softly as he walked up beside her. “Let me drive you back to the hospital.”
She didn’t argue, just nodded. “Thank you.”
“It’s no trouble,” Landon said, his voice low and rough as he shook his head.
On the drive back, Zinnia propped an elbow on the door and rested her head against her hand, staring out the window in silence.
Landon kept glancing at her out of the corner of his eye, wanting to say something, but each time the words caught in his throat.
He stayed silent until the car pulled into the entrance of Veridian University Affiliated Hospital.
As soon as they stopped, Zinnia unbuckled her seatbelt and opened the door. Before Landon could even reach for his own seatbelt, she turned to him. “You’ve already gone out of your way these last few weeks. I can manage on my own now, so you don’t have to trouble yourself anymore.”
A shadow flickered across Landon’s face.
