Landon kept walking, his pace steady, but the constant crackle of fireworks outside grated on his nerves, making him more and more irritable.
Meanwhile, Leanna was still chattering away at his side. “So, are you really just going to let Zinnia go like that, bro? Can you honestly say you’re okay with it?”
Her words made Landon stop dead in his tracks.
He’d always thought his little sister was a bit scatterbrained, never someone to take too seriously. And yet, for some reason, right now he wanted to hear her out.
Was he okay with it? Of course not.
But what difference did it make? Was he supposed to go back to how he was before, desperate and clinging, refusing to let go? Or should he use his influence to pressure her, force her to come back to him?
He didn’t need to try; just the thought of it made him realize Zinnia would only end up resenting him even more.
Leanna crunched loudly on a potato chip, then went on, “Look, even though you two are divorced, that just means you’re both single now. Why not forget the whole ‘ex-husband’ thing and try wooing her as a friend? Be genuine this time and win her back.”
She waved another chip in the air. “That whole ridiculous contract marriage—so what if it’s over? If you just put your heart into it, really show her you care, maybe she’ll forgive you. Zinnia’s a wonderful woman, and she’s loved you for so many years. Don’t underestimate what that means.”
Leanna had only known Zinnia for three years, but every time she saw the way Zinnia looked at Landon, it was clear as day—even to an outsider—just how much she cared. If she didn’t, well, no one else would have put up with Landon’s stubborn streak for so long.
Normally, Landon would’ve brushed off Leanna’s rambling without a second thought, but this time, her words stuck.
He glanced over at her, uncertain and lost. “You really think I have a shot at winning her back?”
Leanna didn’t hesitate. “It’ll be tough.”
Landon’s face darkened, and he was about to retort when Leanna cut him off.
