“Yuri?”
Zinnia’s voice broke the quiet, laced with confusion and surprise.
The man looked up, and behind his goggles, a familiar smile curved his lips.
Once Zinnia finished tending to her patient, she made her way over to Yuri. “What are you doing here?”
“I left the medical school,” he replied, his tone calm.
There was no time for more—people still needed help, and they quickly returned to the chaos of the makeshift hospital.
It wasn’t until late, long after the rush had died down, that they saw each other again back in the break room. They peeled off their protective gear, exhaustion etched into every movement.
“I’m here with Doctors Without Borders this time,” Yuri said, breaking the silence first. His eyes lingered on Zinnia’s face, noting how much thinner she looked.
“Cozy, it’s only been a few days and you’ve already lost weight,” his voice held a note of concern, but his eyes were bright and searching.
Ever since Zinnia had realized how Yuri felt about her, hearing her childhood nickname from his lips sounded different—strange, even intimate.
She laughed awkwardly, brushing a stray strand of hair behind her ear. “Yuri, I’m not a kid anymore. Maybe you should stop calling me that—it just feels weird.”
But Yuri only smiled, a gentle tilt of his lips. “I don’t know. I think it suits you perfectly.”
Zinnia shook her head, a little exasperated. If she’d known the cat they’d found was named Cozy, she never would’ve let slip that it was also her nickname.
Almost as if reading her mind, Yuri said, “Did it ever occur to you that the kitten was named after you?”
Zinnia blinked, caught off guard. Surprise flashed across her face, but she understood instantly what he meant.
