Shannon was taken away by the police.
The poison vial only had her fingerprints on it, which made her the sole suspect of the poisoning. Even security footage showed her outside the infirmary.
No matter how she struggled to understand, she couldn't figure out why she was so unlucky.
As she was led to the police car, she saw Nicola standing in the crowd, watching calmly as if it didn't concern her at all. It finally dawned on Shannon that Nicola had worn gloves when she took the vial, so of course, it only had her fingerprints on it!
Though furious, she soon calmed down and resolved to deny everything. As long as she refused to admit it, there was nothing the police officers could do to her.
…
News of Shannon's arrest reached the hospital in Hardington. Noelle went through a full check-up, and everything came back normal. Still, she decided to return to the ward and get a good night's sleep.
Aside from her and two doctors from the infirmary, all her teammates were at the intensive training camp, so she felt completely at ease.
The next morning, she was woken by a soft, sweet voice outside her door. She opened it, just to see Bonnie entering her ward with a messy head of hair and a bouquet of white roses.
"Mommy! Daddy and I heard you were sick, so we were so worried!" she said, throwing herself into Noelle's arms.
Noelle instinctively caught her. Bonnie's hair was unbrushed, and she clearly must have rushed over as soon as she heard the news.
Looking up, she shot a reproachful glance at Hunter standing in the doorway and asked, "How did you know I was here?"
She'd arrived at the hospital around midnight and hadn't spread the word.
Hunter calmly replied, "Coach Landaal sent me here to take care of you."
After several seconds of silence, Noelle let Bonnie down and fetched a comb. Then, she started braiding Bonnie's hair while saying, "I'm fine. I'm just trying to stage a little act to draw out whoever's been trying to hurt me."
Bonnie sat obediently in the chair while Noelle worked on her hair.
Seeing that Noelle wasn't upset, Hunter stepped into the ward and placed a box of pastries he'd waited in line for on the table. She recognized them instantly as pastries from a famous bakery in Brindley, which she used to love.
She doubted Hunter would go all the way to Brindley just to buy her her favorite pastries.
