Noelle turned to find about six young men and women standing behind her.
The one leading them, a woman in red training gear with a high ponytail, spoke with her arms crossed. "You'll become a laughing stock for showing up at a rookie training camp at your age."
They were all in their early 20s, each one a prodigy selected for the national team.
Ignoring the comment, Noelle stepped aside to change into her training gear for practice when another short-haired woman in yellow training gear blocked her way.
"Let me introduce myself. I'm Hazel Clays, and I'm 21 years old. I was the oldest here before you showed up at this training camp."
The others snickered while Hazel leaned in, looking all innocent and harmless. "Do you even know how to hold a racing wheel? Your name wasn't in the rookie basic training camp list, and Coach Landaal slipped you in last minute. You must have some serious connections, huh?"
She covered her mouth and laughed. "If you're here just to buy a certificate and leave, I'd suggest you turn around now. The racing circuit is dangerous. One wrong move could get you playing with your life."
Noelle shot her an indifferent look and shook her head helplessly. She'd seen all these petty tricks years ago.
She pushed away Hazel, her tone calm as she said, "Wouldn't your time be better spent training than trash-talking? Doesn't that tire you?"
Hazel's expression fell. Just then, the woman with a high ponytail stepped forward and coldly said, "I'm Alexis Tates, who won third place in the F4 Championship. Since you're with Flame Speed Racing now, show us your skill. How about a race?"
Noelle glanced at her and smiled faintly. "I don't play games with children."
Alexis was petite and had a baby face that made her look underage, though she had recently turned 20 years old. She hated nothing more than being treated like a kid, so she stepped closer and refused to back down. "Are you scared to compete with me?"
The others raised their chins and shot Noelle equally provocative glances. They were racers who thrived on competition and challenges, each one convinced they were special and dominated the arena.
Noelle finally understood what Jude had meant by "looking out" for them.
Hazel egged Alexis on. "You can totally win her, Alexis. Your idol is Sheila, and you can beat a newcomer like this any day!"
Alexis lifted her chin confidently and shot Noelle a look of pure disdain. "If you don't even have the guts to race me, how do you expect to compete against anyone on a real track? You might as well go home now and get back to changing diapers."
