Rupert suddenly said, “This lamb is quite good. Xavier, serve some to Aveline so she can try it.”
Aveline quickly looked up. “No need, I can get it myself.”
But Rupert said, “Let him serve you. As a husband, he should know how to be considerate and take care of his wife.”
“Back in the day, when your grandmother was eating, I would always pay attention to what she liked and serve it to her. It made your grandmother so happy.”
While Rupert was talking, Xavier had already placed a few pieces of lamb on Aveline’s plate.
Aveline looked at the pieces of lamb on her plate, pursing her lips, unsure if she should eat them.
If she didn’t eat, Rupert was watching. She didn’t know what he would think of her, or if he would be upset.
Lauren opened her mouth, but ultimately didn’t say what was on her mind, though the look she gave Aveline wasn’t friendly.

Leona wasn’t as reserved. She said, “Grandpa, Xavier is always tired from work. How could he have the energy to take care of Aveline? It should be Aveline taking care of him.”
Rupert’s expression darkened as he looked at Leona.
As if afraid Rupert would scold Leona, Xavier chuckled, “Leona, it’s just serving some food. How could that possibly tire me out?”
Leona pouted. “As long as you’re not tired. I’m just worried about you.”
Aveline silently ate the lamb, ignoring them.
She caught Xavier looking at her from the corner of her eye, and then heard him ask, “Does it taste okay?”
Aveline wasn’t at all surprised by Xavier putting on an act in front of Rupert, so she looked up at the Patriarch,
“the Patriarch, this lamb is indeed quite good.”
Rupert chuckled. “Then you should eat more.
Xavier, give Aveline some more.”
So, Xavier served Aveline more lamb, and some other dishes as well.
Aveline remained expressionless, treating it as repayment for all the years she had served him.
After all, she couldn’t bring herself to be cruel to a kind old man like Rupert and upset him.

Rupert had never asked Xavier to put food on her plate before. Aveline guessed it was because she had asked for a di- vorce, and Rupert had noticed her coldness toward Xavier recently, so he wanted Xavier to be a little nicer to her.
But Rupert was going to be disappointed. Her heart had already grown cold. It was useless no matter how hard Xavier tried to be nice to her.
Besides, Xavier was just putting on an act for Rupert.
A phone on the table chimed, and Aveline instinctively glanced at it, saw Josephine’s name, and quickly looked away without reading the message.
It was Xavier’s phone.
Xavier put down his fork and picked up his phone. Although Aveline wasn’t looking at him, she could tell from the sounds that he was replying to a message.
Rupert looked over, his voice deep. “No phones at the dinner table.”
Xavier chuckled. “Grandfather, you’re acting like an old–fashioned patriarch.”
“Just replying to a message.”
After saying that, he put his phone down.
Then, he picked up his fork and served Aveline some more food.
Aveline moved her plate away and said coolly, “No, thank you.”
Had his acting bug kicked in? This performance was never–ending.
Xavier glanced at her but didn’t say anything, placing the food on his own plate instead.
