Xavier asked, “Anything else?”
“The soft tissue bruises on her forehead and arm will heal over time with some ointment.”
“Okay, I understand. Thank you, Doctor.”
Then came the sound of footsteps.
Aveline knew she had been taken to the hospital.
She opened her eyes.
“Oh, you’re awake.”
Lauren was by the hospital bed, staring at Aveline with a stern face. Her tone was sarcastic, as if Aveline shouldn’t have woken up.
Xavier, who was standing at the door, quickly turned to leave. “Doctor, she’s awake.”
Aveline tried to sit u
pushing herself up with her hands, but she was too dizzy.
Just then, Rupert, who was sitting on the sofa, quickly stood up and said, “Aveline, don’t rush to get up. Stay lying down. You have a concussion.”
Lauren snorted, “Let her get up if she wants to, Dad. She’s not that fragile.”
Rupert flared up, “What nonsense are you talking about?”
Aveline gave up, lay back down, and stared at the ceiling.
Something felt wrong. She had been tripped by Eileen, so why was Lauren being so sarcastic and cold to her?
Xavier walked to the bedside, tucked her in, and stared at her with his deep, dark eyes. “How are you feeling?”
Aveline didn’t speak, but Lauren did. “How could she be? At least she’s not dead.”
Xavier said calmly, “Mom, you and Grandpa should go back to the hotel. I’ll stay here with her.”
Lauren snorted, “Why would I leave? I still have questions for her.”
Rupert frowned and was about to speak, but the doctor came in just then, so he held his tongue.
The doctor examined Aveline, asked her a few questions, and then said, “It’s a mild concussion, so the dizziness is ex- pected. Let’s keep you in the hospital for a few days for observation.”
Aveline, thinking about the Crestmark project, asked, “Doctor, do I have to stay in the hospital? Can I go back to the

hotel to rest?”
Before the doctor could speak, Lauren cut in, “See? She’s fine. She doesn’t even want to be hospitalized.
She’s probably lying about being dizzy, too.”
Aveline was dizzy, and after constantly heating Lauren’s sarcastic remarks, she got emotional and turned to glare coldly at her.
Lauren snapped, “Why are you looking at me like that?”
Rupert slammed his hand on the arm of the sofa. “Can’t you just be quiet?”
Lauren pursed her lips and fell silent.
The doctor finally said, “My recommendation is for her to stay in the hospital for observation. We can’t take this lightly.”
Xavier made the decision for Aveline on the spot. “Fine, she’ll be admitted.”
Aveline frowned slightly, but she knew the doctor was right, so she didn’t say anything.
After the doctor left, Xavier sat by the bed, looking at Aveline. “You must be hungry. Helena made you some food. She’s on her way and will be here soon.”
Out of the corner of her eye, Aveline saw Lauren cast a sinister glance at her stomach.
It dawned on Aveline, and her hand quickly went to her abdomen.
Was she actually pregnant?
Was the baby gone?
But the doctor had only mentioned a concussion, nothing about a baby.
Lauren sneered, “Why are you touching your stomach?
You’re not pregnant, so what’s there to touch?”
Aveline froze.
