“Josie, I need to talk to you.”
Josephine had no choice but to say to Lauren, “Mrs. Beltran, my cousin is scared. I’m going to comfort him.”
Lauren pursed her lips dismissively and said nothing.
Josephine and Benjamin found a hidden corner to talk.
“Josie, I admit it was me who tripped Aveline.”
Benjamin gripped Josephine’s wrist tightly, making her frown. When she heard this, she was stunned.
“What, you confessed? Are you crazy?
You didn’t tell the officer I put you up to it, did you?”
Benjamin shook his head. “I didn’t confess. I just said it’s possible I accidentally tripped Aveline, but I don’t remem- ber doing it.”
“You have no idea how scary that male officer’s questioning was. He said if I didn’t admit it, and the security footage proved I did trip Aveline, then I’d be giving a false statement.”
Josephine angrily shook off Benjamin’s hand. “You’re hurting me.
You idiot, I could have asked my darling to take care of the security footage for you. We could have said the camera just happened to be broken at that moment. Why did you admit anything?”
Benjamin asked urgently, “So did you tell Xavier?”
Josephine was at a loss for words, then said, “He was called away by Rupert. I haven’t had a chance to talk to him yet.”
Benjamin stomped his foot. “Then call or text him right now! Once Aveline finishes her statement, the police might go straight to the Beltran Hotel to get the footage.”
Josephine frowned. “A text message won’t be clear enough.”
You don’t get it. My darling is great to me, but even he has his limits. He’d help me in a heartbeat, but to get him to help you, I’d really have to beg.”
Eileen grew frantic and grabbed Josephine’s hand again. “Josie, you have to help me. Otherwise, I’ll have to tell them it was you.”
Josephine’s eyes widened. “Are you crazy?”

Chapter 177
Eileen glanced around and lowered her voice. “Josie, you told me to find a chance to trip Aveline and cause a miscar- riage. I said she might not even be pregnant, but you said Xavier’s aunt confirmed it and it couldn’t be wrong.”
Josephine bit her lip and said harshly, “You took my money. Don’t you dare run your mouth. If you talk, we both go down.”
“Then you can’t just let me take the fall alone.”
“Aveline wasn’t pregnant, didn’t miscarry, and wasn’t even that badly hurt, was she? Just a minor concussion. I see she’s eating and sleeping well, and even using this as an excuse to have my darling keep her company.”
“Cousin, don’t worry. Gerald is very capable. With him helping you, you’ll be fine.”
“I don’t care. You have to get Xavier to deal with the security footage today. And call Gerald to defend me, quickly.
I never knew the police could be so terrifying. I regret this so much now. I never should have agreed to do this for you.”
Just then, Xavier and Rupert walked over. Josephine quickly whispered to Eileen:
“Stop talking.”
“Then you have to save me.”
Josephine ignored Eileen and walked toward Xavier and Rupert,
“Rupert, darling, my cousin has finished her statement, but my sister hasn’t yet. I wonder how she’s doing. Why is the officer asking so many questions?”
The implication was that it wasn’t the officer who was talkative, but Aveline.
When Rupert heard Josephine call Xavier “darling” again right to his face, his expression soured.
Seeing this, Xavier said, “I just haven’t told her yet.”
With a grim face, Rupert remained silent and continued walking forward.
