Chapter 176
“Don’t you ever call him that again. If I hear it one more time, I’ll go to your mother, the other woman, and ask her just what she taught you about being a decent person.”
Seeing how ruthless Lauren was, Josephine stopped arguing, lowered her head, and put on a pitiful, chastened expres- sion.
But a vicious glint flashed in her downcast eyes.
Lauren couldn’t see it, and seeing her bow her head made her feel a little better.
Rupert and Xavier went into an empty hospital room. Rupert sat on the sofa, looking at Xavier with a grim face.
Xavier sat in an armchair, calmly meeting Rupert’s gaze and waiting for him to speak.
“Has she always called you that?”
Xavier was confused. “Who?”
Rupert slapped the arm of the sofa. “Who else? Jacob’s illegitimate daughter.”
Xavier said lightly, “Are you talking about how she doesn’t call me brother–in–law?“.
“I mean why she calls you ‘darling.‘ Yes, that’s right. She should call you brother–in–law, not anything else.”
Xavier laughed. “You’re upset over this?”
Rupert’s face grew even tighter. “What, you think I’m being unreasonable?”
Xavier replied, “Young people these days throw the word ‘darling‘ around.”
Rupert snorted. “Then how come Aveline doesn’t call you that?
Aveline and that illegitimate girl were born in the same year. They’re just as young.”
Xavier’s eyes darkened, and he said nothing.
Rupert stared at him. “What, nothing to say for yourself?”
Xavier laughed. “Are you really taking this so seriously?
Jacob sent Josephine abroad to study for a few years, so her habits are a little different from Aveline’s.”
Rupert slapped the armrest again. “Stop making excuses for her.
No wonder Aveline is so insistent on divorcing you. She calls you that right to Aveline’s face. Do you think Aveline
likes that?”

“Don’t let her call you that again, you hear me?”
Xavier smiled faintly. “It’s just a phrase she uses. But if it makes you unhappy, fine. I’ll tell her to stop.”
Rupert pointed his finger at Xavier, “With that attitude, I can tell you’re not taking my words seriously. You don’t re- alize how severe this is.”
Xavier replied, “I really don’t care much about that title.”
Rupert’s eyes narrowed, his gaze sharp as he stared at Xavier, as if trying to read his mind.
Xavier’s expression was calm.
Rupert said, “I don’t care what you’re really thinking. You just need to know where the line is, and you can’t cross it.”
Xavier smiled, “Alright, I think I understand your boundaries now. I know what to do.”
Rupert gave him a scrutinizing look and asked, “What do you think about Aveline calling the police?
You were there yesterday. Did her paternal cousin actually trip Aveline?”
Xavier frowned slightly and rubbed his forehead. “I wasn’t looking at my feet, how would I know what happened?
She suddenly fell forward, and I was so scared I rushed to catch her. I thought she’d just lost her footing.”
“She said Benjamin tripped her. I was shocked too, I don’t understand why.”
Rupert’s face was grim. “So you didn’t watch the security footage?”
Xavier said lightly, “Why would Benjamin trip her on purpose for no reason? She has a concussion, her mind might not be clear, or maybe Benjamin did it by accident.”
“But Aveline already called the police and accused her paternal cousin of attempted murder. That’s a serious crime.”
Xavier was still unconcerned. “Then let the police investigate.”
Rupert said in a low voice, “Gerald is your friend, and he’s the lawyer for both the and you personally. It’s not appro- priate for you to introduce him to Benjamin.”
