She pulled Jacob. “Dad, Xav is right. My sister has a concussion and is still unstable. Let’s wait until she’s calmed down to talk to her.”

“And Xav will talk to her, right, Xav?”

In the hospital room, Fiona glanced at Rupert and Lauren, then walked over to Aveline and said in a low voice,

“Do you know what Xavier went off to do?”

Aveline looked at her, waiting for her to continue.

Fiona gave a sarcastic smile. “He went to ask the doctor if your concussion could make you hallucinate.”

Aveline’s brow furrowed slightly, then a cold smirk played on her lips.

Xavier didn’t believe her. He thought she was either throwing a tantrum, trying to get revenge on Eileen, or that she was hallucinating that Eileen was trying to harm her.

He never once considered that Eileen would actually try to harm her.

And naturally, he wouldn’t have guessed that Josephine was the one who put Eileen up to it.

“What did the doctor say?”

Fiona said irritably, “What could the doctor say? There are documented cases of this, so of course the doctor said it was a possibility.”

“But don’t worry, I stood up to Xavier for you. I told him instead of wasting time asking the doctor, he should just look at the security footage. The truth would be perfectly clear.”

Although they had lowered their voices, they were all in the same room, so Rupert and Lauren heard everything.

Lauren snorted, “The doctor confirmed Xavier’s suspicion. That proves Xavier was right.

You very well could be hallucinating.”

Aveline didn’t look at Lauren, nor did she intend to reply.

Xavier walked in, with the doctor.

Aveline said, “I have a few questions I’d like to ask you in private.”

As she spoke, she glanced over at Xavier, Rupert, and Lauren, her meaning clear: she wanted them to leave.

Lauren was displeased. “What is this about? What could you have to say that you can’t say in front of us?”

Fiona replied, “Patients have a right to privacy. Mrs. Beltran, let’s step outside.”

“I’m her mother–in–law. I’m staying here with her.”

Rupert had already stood up. “The lawyer is right. Let’s step outside.”

Xavier said, “Grandfather, Mom, Aveline is mostly fine now. You should both go back to the city. I’ll stay here and take care of her.”

Rupert nodded. “Alright, with you here, we can rest easy.”

Aveline’s expression was cold, and she said nothing.

Fiona let out a soft scoff.

It was unclear if Rupert heard, as the butler helped him out of the room.

Xavier, however, glanced at Fiona, smiled nonchalantly, and then urged his mom to leave.

Fiona asked Aveline, “Do you need me to stay with you?”

Aveline had no secrets to hide from her. “You can stay if you want.”
