“I’m sorry, I forgot for a moment.”
She continued, “Xavier, I can see my sister is still angry. She definitely won’t want to have dinner together. I’ll go tell my mom and dad to just forget it.”
After she finished, Josephine gave Xavier an innocent and wronged look, waiting for his reply.
Xavier didn’t look at Josephine, his dark, emotionless eyes fixed on Aveline.
Hearing what Josephine said, he replied flatly, “Mm, then forget it.”
Josephine turned and walked away, going back to Courtney and Jacob.
Aveline knew why Xavier was staring at her. Heh, it had to be because she was so rude to Josephine, and in public,
too.
Maybe Xavier even thought she was lying about Josephine seeing her in the parking lot, just like how he doubted she was the one who saved his life.
Aveline didn’t care what Xavier thought of her. She asked Valentina, “Do you want to have dinner with your aunt?”
Valentina nodded, “Of course I want to have dinner with you, Auntie.
Auntie, I want to go to the night market, okay?”
It was Friday, and there was no school tomorrow, so Aveline thought it was fine to take Valentina out.
“Okay.
Auntie will go upstairs and change first. At seven, we’ll go to the night market and have some street food delicacies for dinner.”
Valentina cheered.
Xavier then said, “You stay with your auntie. I’ll wait for you both in the lobby at seven to leave together.”
As he said this, he looked at Aveline.
But Aveline didn’t answer him, not even glancing his way, and took Valentina’s hand to the elevator.
Jasmine and Julian hadn’t been home in a long time and were planning to go back this weekend. They had originally wanted to leave after having dinner with Aveline, but now that she was taking Valentina to the night market, they de- cided to head back to the city early.
Jasmine followed Aveline into the room. Valentina was happily jumping on the big bed. Jasmine leaned close to Ave-

line.
“Just you and Xavier, will that be okay?”
Aveline took off her coat and said lightly, “What could happen?
I’m just taking Valentina out for a bit, just for one evening. I don’t have to pay him any mind.
I’m going back to my maternal grandparents‘ house tomorrow anyway. There’s no way I’m helping him look after Valentina this weekend.”
Jasmine nodded, “Yeah, that child likes you so much. Being good to her is building good karma.”
Aveline looked at Valentina and smiled. “I was just thinking that after the divorce, Valentina and I probably won’t see each other anymore. So for now, I’ll just try to grant her wishes as much as I can.”
Jasmine hugged Aveline. “Aveline, you’re just too kind–hearted. Xavier must be blind, completely blinded and fool- ish, not to see how good you are.”
“Ava, you’ll be rewarded for your kindness.”
Aveline smiled again. “I’m doing pretty well right now. My career is going smoothly, and that’s a good reward in it- self.”
“Hmph, leaving that heartless man is the real reward.
Your career success is because you’re talented and you worked hard for it.”
Valentina, who was jumping around, caught a few words and turned to ask, “Who’s the heartless man?”
Jasmine huffed in annoyance.
Aveline quickly shot her a look, worried she would say Xavier’s name.
No matter what, you shouldn’t speak ill of her uncle in front of a child.
Aveline replied to Valentina, “It’s someone else.
Alright, Valentina, do you want some water? I’ll get you a drink.”
“Okay, thank you, Auntie.”
