Xavier has always listened to the old man, so that’s also a problem.]
Aveline remembered her maternal grandparents hadn’t fully enjoyed the Southern River–style Cuisine Rupert had treated them to last time, so she arranged with Fiona to take them out for it that evening.
Of course, they couldn’t talk about the divorce and the case in front of her grandparents, so Aveline planned to discuss it with Fiona at a bar after dinner.
When they met in the private dining room, Collin and Paulina were very warm toward Fiona. They thanked her for in- troducing Aveline to her cousin, which gave Aveline the opportunity to land such a huge project.
Fiona smiled. “Aveline is talented, that’s why I introduced her to my brother. He saw she was capable, so he gave her the project.”
Fiona brought traditional health tonics for the elderly couple. Paulina had also prepared something; she slipped a fam- ily heirloom bracelet from her own wrist onto Fiona’s.
Fiona could tell the bracelet was high quality, worth at least a hundred thousand. “Oh, this is far too valuable. I can’t accept it.”
Paulina stopped her from taking it off, patting her hand with a smile. “I’m giving this to you because I’ve taken a lik- ing to you.”
“This bracelet is actually one of a pair. Aveline’s mother gave them to me. I’m giving one to you, and the other to
Aveline.”
Fiona understood the old woman’s sentiment and was deeply touched. She glanced at Aveline.
Aveline gave a small smile. “Just accept it.
But maybe wait until you’re a little older to wear it. It might look a bit matronly on you right now.”
Fiona laughed. “Alright, alright. When we’re both old, we’ll each wear one.
Thank you, Paulina.”
The atmosphere at dinner was wonderful. The elderly couple ate happily and enjoyed themselves thoroughly, and Aveline was very pleased.
As they were getting ready to leave, Aveline and Miranda accompanied Paulina to the restroom.
Just outside the private dining room, she saw Benjamin and Josephine walking away down the other end of the hall. Their backs were to them, so they hadn’t been seen.
Aveline cursed inwardly, “Damn it.” What a small world. She exchanged a look with Miranda.

Thankfully, Paulina’s eyesight was poor and she wasn’t wearing her glasses, so she didn’t recognize them.

On the way back from the restroom, Aveline worried that Josephine might find out they were there and start trouble, so she hurried her maternal grandparents to leave.
All the way from the private dining room to the restaurant’s entrance, Aveline was on edge, worried that Josephine or Benjamin would suddenly appear.
Luckily, they made it to the parking lot without incident.
Miranda drove Collin and Paulina home, and Aveline got into Fiona’s car to head to the bar.
The moment the elderly couple’s car pulled away, Josephine and Benjamin walked out of the restaurant, with Vincent right behind them.
Fiona frowned. “Damn it, what rotten luck.”
Aveline said calmly, “Just ignore them. Let’s get in the car.”
But the siblings, Josephine and Benjamin, had spotted Aveline too. Vincent immediately glared at her. “Aveline, you dare to be out and about? Get over here now that I’ve seen you.”
Aveline grabbed Fiona and walked toward Fiona’s car, ignoring Vincent.
But Vincent ran over, reaching out to grab Aveline’s shoulder.
Aveline quickly dodged. Fiona snapped, “Hey, what do you think you’re doing? You lay a hand on her and see if we don’t call the police.”
