She looked up at Devin. “Uncle, why did you get so angry? You should just talk things out with my sister.”

“Before we came here, you promised me you’d talk to my sister properly. My sister cares about family, she would have definitely agreed to let our cousin go.”

Xavier walked to the center of the living room. He looked at Aveline first, studying her face, then his gaze traveled down, pausing for a moment on the scratch on her arm.

Aveline looked at him coldly, a sarcastic smile playing on her lips.

Xavier looked down at Josephine, who was still picking up the pieces of the phone. “Leave it. Get up.”

Josephine stood up, tears welling in her eyes. She sniffled, “Brother–in–law, I’m so sorry. I didn’t expect Uncle to lose his temper like that. He’s not normally like this, he’s a very gentle person. He just lost control because Vin was locked up.”

Jacob quickly came over. “Son–in–law, I’m sorry for this mess.”

“Sigh, if only Aveline had properly apologized to her uncle and agreed to get Vincent released, none of this would have happened.”

“And on top of that, Aveline threatened to call the cops on her uncle. Of course he was going to be mad.”

“What a disgrace to the family, raising such a cold, heartless daughter.”

Josephine quickly said, “Dad, don’t say that about my sister.”

Jacob sighed, “Oh, Josie, you’re just too kind, too soft–hearted. You’ll only get hurt that way.”

Josephine took Jacob’s hand and shook it. “Dad, I don’t mind getting the short end of the stick, as long as our family can get along, that’s all I want.”

Devin and Eileen exchanged a look. The father and daughter kept quiet, because the next part of the show was best performed by just the father–daughter duo of Josephine and Jacob.

They were afraid it would backfire if they got involved.

Aveline saw Josephine and Jacob had stopped talking, but they were still putting on a show. Josephine even looked up at Xavier with tears in her eyes.

She said coldly, “Are you done with the act?

If you are, get out.”

Devin heard the word “get out” and got furious. He pointed at Aveline and rushed towards her, “What did you say?”

Josephine cut him off, “If my sister doesn’t agree, there’s nothing I can do.”

With her back to Xavier, she gave Devin a sharp look, her warning clear.

Aveline happened to see her profile and a sneer formed on her lips.
