Chapter 231
Alfred replied, “I really don’t. I’m getting old, my memory’s not what it used to be. I just remember everyone that night saying Mr. Beltran’s date was very beautiful, like a butterfly.”
Fiona coughed quietly to keep from laughing out loud.
Aveline lowered her eyes, her expression indifferent.
Then they heard Josephine say, “Mr. Jenkins, my name is Josephine.”
Alfred was taken aback and glanced at Aveline. “What a coincidence, your last name is Sutton too.”
Josephine smiled, “We’re sisters.”
Aveline looked up, her gaze on Josephine cold.
At that moment, as if afraid Aveline would say “She’s my dad’s illegitimate daughter,” Xavier spoke up:
“They’re half–sisters, same father.”
Hearing this, Aveline’s lips curved into a sneer.
Xavier really underestimated her. No matter how much she looked down on Josephine, she wouldn’t be so tactless as to say something like that now and make Alfred uncomfortable.
Still, “half–sisters, same father” wasn’t exactly a pleasant thing to hear.
And sure enough, after hearing it, Alfred gave Josephine a strange look.
Josephine looked to be about the same age as Aveline, and Bethany had only passed away a few years ago. It was easy to figure out that Josephine was the illegitimate daughter of Bethany’s husband.
Fiona, close to Aveline, let out a soft scoff.
Aveline remained silent and indifferent, but she knew Josephine didn’t care what others thought. Courtney and Josephine never felt any shame about their status as the other woman and an illegitimate daughter.
They believed their personal charm could conquer any man.
Alfred was a man too; it was impossible for him not to like beautiful women. After all, he had just praised Josephine for being beautiful, like a butterfly.
So Josephine smiled and said, “Yes, Mr. Jenkins, we’re half–sisters. Do you think we look alike?”
Alfred said flatly, “I see.”
He didn’t answer her question.

Then he looked at Aveline and said to Sebastian, “You said you were going to introduce a young friend to me. Why didn’t you tell me sooner she was Bethany’s daughter? If I had known…”
As he said this, Alfred inexplicably glanced at Xavier.
Sebastian followed his gaze and also glanced at Xavier, who had a placid expression. It was unclear if he didn’t under- stand Alfred’s meaning, or if he understood but didn’t care.
“It’s not too late to introduce her to you now.”
Alfred smiled at that and said no more, inviting them to the dining room to eat.
Besides them, Alfred had also invited two old friends from Entora, gallery owner Peter Stone and musician Sylvia Vance. When they heard Aveline was Bethany’s daughter, they immediately started talking to her.
Aveline hadn’t expected her mother to have such a good reputation in the industry. She felt both happy and sad. Happy because her mother was so remarkable, and sad because her mother was gone and, while alive, seemed un- aware of the high regard in which many painters and artists held her.
What was heartbreaking was that her mother had first worried about Jacob’s startup funds, and after he became suc- cessful, she worried about her and Jacob’s family. She rarely attended industry events, so she had no idea what an amazing painter Aveline was.
