When she arrived at her maternal grandparents‘ house, it was just dinnertime, and the old couple was both surprised and delighted to see her.

Paulina hugged her, “Aveline, what brings you back?”

Collin asked, “Have you eaten? If not, join us.”

Aveline said she hadn’t eaten, so Miranda set a place for her.

While they were eating, Paulina asked again, “You still haven’t told us why you came back so suddenly?”

Aveline didn’t want to ruin their appetite, so she said evasively, “It’s about Rupert’s birthday celebration. I wanted to discuss it with you, but let’s talk after we finish eating.”

They wondered if something had changed, so they didn’t press the issue.

After the meal, the three of them ate fruit in the living room.

When Aveline saw they were about finished, she said, “Collin, Paulina, there’s something I need to tell you. But be- fore I do, I need you to not be shocked, because this is a decision I’ve thought long and hard about.”

The two of them exchanged a look, their expressions turning serious.

Something that could shock them had to be a big deal.

Collin asked in a low voice, “Aveline, is something wrong with one of your projects?”

Aveline heard him and sighed inwardly.

Her grandparents would only think something was wrong with her work, not with her marriage.

In their minds, she loved Xavier too much to ever leave him on her own.

Aveline shook her head and denied it, “It has nothing to do with work.”

Paulina grew a little nervous, “Nothing to do with work?”

“Don’t be nervous, listen to me. It’s not bad news.”

“I’ve decided to leave Xavier. I’m going to divorce him.”

Collin and Paulina had just started to relax after hearing it wasn’t bad news, but when they heard Aveline say she was getting a divorce, their eyes widened in shock.

Collin asked in a low voice, “What happened? Why the divorce?”

Aveline didn’t want to mention Josephine, to avoid upsetting the old couple, so she said, “We don’t get along. I don’t have feelings for him anymore.”

The old couple looked at each other again.

The idea that Aveline no longer had feelings for Xavier was even more shocking to them than her wanting a divorce.

Paulina sat down next to Aveline and took her hand. “Aveline, what happened?”

“Was it your mother–in–law, or his older sister, giving you trouble?”

Aveline gave a faint smile. “I certainly don’t like them, but my decision to divorce has nothing to do with them. It’s simply that I don’t have feelings for Xavier anymore.”

Collin felt it definitely wasn’t that simple. He scrutinized Aveline,

“You don’t just lose feelings for no reason. What did he do to wrong you?”

“Aveline, your grandparents may be old, but if Xavier dares to bully you, we can still get justice for you.”

Paulina was startled. “Did Xavier hit you?”

Aveline shook her head. “Xavier wouldn’t do something like that. He despises men who hit women.”

“Grandpa, Grandma, please stop guessing. I’ve just woken up to the truth. Xavier doesn’t actually love me.”

“He got engaged to me and married me because I once saved him. His grandfather and his mother thought I was a Guardian Angel and made him marry me, that’s the only reason he did.”

The old couple fell silent.
