Jacob was raging at home.
Courtney watched him, slowly eating from a plate of strawberries, and said, “darling, shouldn’t you be considering writing a will now?”
Jacob jumped in shock. “A w–will? What will?
Why are you jinxing me? I’m in the prime of my life, perfectly healthy. Why would I write a will?”
Courtney sighed. “With Aveline acting like this, so arrogant and domineering, if you don’t write a will soon, I’m afraid she’ll fight my unborn son for the inheritance.”
“Rich people all write their wills early. People aren’t superstitious about these things anymore.”
Jacob’s face grew serious, and he fell into deep thought.
Courtney noticed, and an unsettling smile touched her lips.
At three in the afternoon, while Xavier was waiting for his flight in the airport’s VIP lounge, Rupert called.
“Grandpa, what’s up?”
“You’re on a business trip?”
“Yeah, I’m at the airport now, heading back.”
“Christopher just called. He said he and Mr. Steele won’t be coming to the Birthday banquet tomorrow night.”
Xavier frowned slightly. “Did they say why?”
“Hmph, I was about to ask you.
They said they’re getting old and don’t like crowds.
I think that’s just an excuse. Did you do something to make Aveline angry again?”
Xavier said calmly, “Christopher has high blood pressure. It’s understandable he wouldn’t want to attend a banquet.”
“Don’t try to brush me off. When the invitations were sent, they were very happy and said they would definitely
come.”
“What about Aveline then? Is she not coming either?”
Sitting nearby, Claude Steele raised an eyebrow slightly upon hearing the name.
But he resisted looking over at Xavier, so Mr. Beltran wouldn’t think he was deliberately listening to his call.

Chapter 254
Rupert snapped, “You’re asking me? Who am I supposed to ask?”

“This Birthday banquet is to announce your marriage to Aveline. If Christopher and Mr. Steele don’t come, how will
that look?”
Xavier replied, “I understand. I’ll talk to Aveline.”
“You brat, if you don’t get back on Aveline’s good side, don’t even think about coming to see me.”
With that, Rupert hung up the phone.
Xavier went to call Aveline’s number, then remembered she wouldn’t pick up, gave a sarcastic laugh, and sent a text,
“Didn’t you say you wanted Grandpa to have a good birthday celebration? If your maternal grandparents don’t come, how is the old man supposed to celebrate?”
When Aveline saw the message, she thought Xavier was playing dumb and asking something he already knew. She kept giving him the cold shoulder and didn’t reply.
He had boarded the plane and it was about to take off; when Xavier saw Aveline still hadn’t replied, his lips twisted into a small, self–deprecating smile.
Aveline wasn’t answering his calls or texts now; the only way to communicate with her was to go talk to her in per-
son.
Xavier muttered, “Aveline, you’re clever. You’ve found a good way to torment me.”
Claude glanced at him out of the corner of his eye.
Aveline’s maternal grandparents weren’t attending Rupert’s birthday banquet. Should he tell Josephine this news?
At 9 PM, the plane landed, and Xavier and Claude walked out of the terminal together.
Claude drove his own car home.
Xavier got into the black Bentley and told the driver, “To Mount Ardwood.”
As the car drove away from the airport, Xavier called Aveline.
She still didn’t pick up.
Xavier smiled, unconcerned, and sent a text: “Not picking up, huh? You’ll regret this.”
Aveline, sitting on the bed in her hotel room, scoffed.
Is it illegal not to answer the phone? Am I going to jail for it?
What was there to regret?
Aveline picked up her book and went back to reading. At ten o’clock, she turned off the lights and went to sleep.
She was sound asleep when the doorbell woke her.
