Chapter 283
Aveline looked at Rupert, saw the expectant look in his eyes, and said,
“It’s a persimmon tree.
Rupert laughed. “That’s right, a persimmon tree. Wouldn’t it be perfect to place the pair of carved jade figurines you gave me on this tree?”
As he spoke, the Patriarch placed the persimmon tree on the coffee table, took out Aveline’s pair of carved jade figurines, and gently arranged them on its branches.
Persimmon trees are one of the trees that cicadas love to rest on.
Valentina cheered. “Great–grandpa, it’s so pretty!”
Rupert laughed. “Your aunt and uncle are truly in sync.”
Valentina asked, confused, “Great–grandpa, what does ‘in sync‘ mean?”
Rupert gently tapped her on the nose. “Look it up in the dictionary when you get home.”
Aveline sensed the hostile glares from Leona and Josephine. She calmly averted her eyes, looking down without a word.
She understood what Rupert was implying. He was just trying to tell her that she and Xavier were a match made in heaven, hoping she would give up on the idea of a divorce.
Aunt let out a dry laugh. “Perhaps Aveline and Xavier planned it together?”
Just then, Xavier pushed the door open. He heard the comment, looked toward Aveline, and asked,
“Planned what together?”
Brielle smiled, pointing at the persimmon tree on the coffee table. “She means the tree you gave and the cicadas from Aveline.”
Valentina ran up to Xavier and tugged on his hand. “Uncle, look! Great–grandpa put Auntie’s carved jade figurines on your persimmon tree. Doesn’t it look pretty?”
Xavier patted Valentina’s head and looked at Aveline with a faint smile. “It does look very pretty.

Chapter 283
What a coincidence.”
Aveline gave him a cold look, cursing inwardly, “Coincidence, my ass.”

He was the one who told the clerk to give her a discount when she bought this pair of carved jade figurines at the boutique in the Beltran Hotel the other day.
Knowing she was giving the Patriarch a pair of carved jade figurines, he went out of his way to find or commission this Persimmon Tree Sculpture just to please the Patriarch.
Hah, just what you’d expect from a shrewd businessman–cunning and manipulative.
Valentina giggled, “Maternal great–grandfather also said you and Auntie are on the same… same… same… what was it?”
Xavier chimed in, “On the same wavelength?”
“Yes, on the same wavelength.
Uncle, what does ‘on the same wavelength‘ mean?”
Xavier answered her, “It means we thought of the same thing.”
Valentina nodded and said, “Ohhh,” drawing out the sound as if she understood, but also as if she didn’t quite get it.
Just then, Leona suddenly pointed at Xavier and exclaimed, “Oh my, Xavier, how did your clothes get torn?”
Everyone in the room looked at Xavier’s suit, and sure enough, there was a small tear on the sleeve Leona was pointing at.
Xavier lifted his arm to look at the sleeve and said calmly, “Ah, a cat scratched it.”
“A cat?
How could there be a cat in the house?”
Everyone was surprised.
Xavier glanced at Aveline, as if by chance, “Yes. A pretty wild cat.”
Aveline looked away coldly, pretending she didn’t hear what Xavier said.
If he had the guts, he should’ve just said she pushed him. What’s the point of all this passive- aggressive sarcasm?
