Aveline acted as if she hadn’t heard and turned to Valentina. “Is it good? Not too salty?”
Valentina beamed and shook her head. “It’s delicious! Your Savory Fried Rice is the best in the world, Auntie. Uncle said the Savory Fried Rice at Granvia Restaurant was the best in Entora and took me there, but I don’t think it’s as good as yours.”
Aveline smiled faintly and patted Valentina’s head, saying softly, “Thank you for the high praise, Valentina.”
Josephine placed a bowl of Savory Fried Rice in front of Xavier. “Darling, go ahead and eat.”
Then she served herself while saying, “Valentina, what do you like to eat at Granvia Restaurant?”
The five–year–old girl, unaware of Josephine’s intentions, tilted her head in thought and said, “The Grilled Lamb Skewers are good.”
Josephine smiled. “Oh, Aunt Josie likes Grilled Lamb Skewers too. I ordered them last night when I went with your uncle. I’ll take you next time.”
Valentina turned to look at Aveline and said, “Auntie should come with us.”
Aveline gave Valentina a faint smile but said nothing, lowering her head to eat her Savory Fried Rice.
Valentina remembered that her uncle and Aunt Josie had gone to Granvia Restaurant last night without her aunt, so she said to Xavier:
“Uncle, Auntie should come with us.”
Xavier looked up and smiled at Valentina. “Okay.”
Aveline kept eating, her expression impassive.
Josephine gave Aveline a long, hard look. Aveline had been acting strange lately, completely unmoved by her provo-
cations.
Before, even if Aveline wouldn’t cause a scene in front of Xavier, she’d at least give her a dirty look. Her current com- posure was truly odd.
Could it really be because they got their marriage certificate? Was she so confident now that she didn’t care if Xavier was involved with other women?
After dinner, Valentina pulled Aveline aside, wanting to show her a drawing she’d made in kindergarten.
In the past, whether they had guests or not, Aveline was always the one who cooked and cleared the table afterward.
This time, she got up calmly, said nothing, and followed Valentina to the living room.

In the dining room, Josephine said, “Darling, go relax in the living room. I’ll clean up.”
But Xavier didn’t leave the dining room; he stayed behind to help Josephine, apparently unable to bear letting her clean up alone.
When Xavier and Josephine came out of the dining room, Aveline was discussing the drawing with Valentina, not sparing them a single glance.
Valentina happily told Xavier, “Uncle, Aunt said my drawing is great and very creative. I want to be a painter just like Aunt when I grow up.”
Valentina had already heard from her mom that her aunt’s mother was a famous painter, so her aunt was also great at drawing and was a designer.
So she was naturally thrilled to get her aunt’s praise.
Xavier nodded, “That’s great. Then you should work hard.”
Josephine placed a plate of washed strawberries on the coffee table and said with a smile, “Valentina, my sister isn’t a painter.”
Valentina was stunned and looked over at Aveline.
She had no idea what a designer was; because her mom said her aunt was great at drawing, she just assumed a design- er was also a painter.
Aveline looked at Valentina and smiled slightly, “I’m not really a painter, because I’m not interested in painting. I de- sign things, like how houses and gardens look, but a good designer does need to have basic drawing skills.”
Valentina nodded, as if she only half–understood. “Then, Aunt, I want to be a painter and a designer.”
Aveline smiled and stroked Valentina’s head, “Okay, you can do that.”
Josephine looked at Xavier and said with a smile, “Darling, my sister really knows how to get kids to like her.”
