He looked down at his phone screen, murmuring, “She’s gotten bold.”

Josephine’s eyes glinted as she asked with a smile, “Darling, who would be so bold as to make you angry?”

Valentina, who was eating BBQ, turned to look at Xavier. “Uncle, is Auntie coming home?”

Xavier picked up his fork to give her some meat. “Auntie’s still working. She might not be able to make it back.”

Valentina pouted, “Then who’s going to give me a bath?”

Xavier put the cooked BBQ on her plate. “If you want Auntie to give you a bath, you should call her and ask her yourself.”

Josephine, not wanting Aveline to come home, said to Valentina with a bright smile, “Valentina, wouldn’t you like it if Aunt Josie gave you your bath?

My sister probably doesn’t want you to bother her. You might mess things up for her.”

Valentina asked, confused, “Mess things up for her?”

“That’s right. My sister is entertaining the big boss from Crestmark. She’ll definitely have to drink, and how can she give you a bath if she’s been drinking, right?”

As she said this, Josephine glanced over at Xavier, watching for his reaction.

She saw his expression was neutral as he continued to cook the BBQ.

Valentina looked at Josephine, unable to accept her offer to give her a bath, and said stubbornly, “I only want Auntie to give me my bath.”

Turning to Xavier, she said, “Uncle, I only want Aveline.”

Xavier said flatly, “Then you tell Auntie yourself.”

Valentina agreed, took Xavier’s phone, and called Aveline.

In the private dining room next door, Aveline saw another call coming from Xavier, silently cursed him for being nuts, and rejected it again.

Valentina looked at Xavier with a pout.

Xavier patted her head comfortingly. “Text Auntie and tell her it’s Valentina.”

Valentina blinked. “Does Auntie think it’s Uncle calling, and not me, so she’s not picking up?”

Xavier: “…Probably.”

Josephine quickly added, “Valentina, my sister is mad at your uncle.”

Valentina glanced at Josephine, then at Xavier. “Uncle, did you do something wrong?”

A five–year–old’s logic is that people only get angry when someone else has done something wrong to them.

Xavier picked up his teacup, took a sip, and said nothing.

Josephine glanced at him, then said, “Valentina, your uncle didn’t do anything wrong. My sister is just throwing a fit.”

Valentina thought her auntie was so pretty and gentle; there was no way she would just throw a fit.

She didn’t believe it, but she didn’t argue with Josephine. Instead, she took the phone to text Aveline.

[Auntie, it’s Valentina. Can you come home and give me a bath?]

Aveline frowned when she saw the message, annoyed that Xavier had let Valentina send it.

Was there really no one else who could give Valentina a bath?
