Chapter 51
Dylan must have said more than just that her design was bad. It was just that Valentina, as a five–year–old, had limited understanding, but she had picked up that he was belittling her abilities to Xavier.
Valentina saw Aveline’s serious expression and thought she was upset, so she quickly tried to comfort her.
“But Auntie, I stood up for you. I told Uncle that you’re amazing, that your mom is a famous painter, so you’re a de- signer too.”
Aveline’s heart warmed, and she was touched. She smiled and stroked Valentina’s little face. “Thank you for speaking up for me, Valentina. That makes me very happy.”
Valentina smiled a little shyly.
But then her brow furrowed. “But it seemed like Uncle wasn’t listening. He only listened to Josie.”
Aveline smiled, but there was a bitterness to it. “Mm, it’s okay. As long as Valentina knows I’m amazing, that’s enough for me. I don’t need Uncle to know”
Valentina couldn’t tell the difference in her smiles. Seeing Aveline smile again, she thought she wasn’t sad anymore and smiled too.
After her bath, Aveline put moisturizing lotion on Valentina and then tucked her into bed.
At the airport, Xavier got out of a black Bentley and strode into the terminal with his long legs.
He had plenty of time, so he passed through security smoothly and went into the VIP lounge.
Just then, Lauren called. Xavier answered, and Lauren’s voice was displeased. “Where is Aveline living now that she’s moved out of Winslow Heights?”
Xavier said flatly, “What are you trying to say?”
“Didn’t you say she was living at Parkview Estates? Why is she in some place called Anmin Residential Communi- ty?”
Xavier rubbed his temples. “How do you know that?”
“Valentina told me.
I was just chatting with her on WhatsApp. She said you were going on a business trip and dropped her off at her aun- t’s place. I thought it was strange right away, I assumed it was the Sutton family’s home, but Valentina said it was Aveline’s office.”
“Why is Aveline living in her office?”

Xavier had to explain, “It’s a studio she opened with a friend. It’s a suite.”
“Why is she living in a studio?
She’s your wife. She’s not at Winslow Heights taking care of you, she’s not at Parkview Estates, and she’s not at her maiden home. What does it mean that she’s living in a studio?
If this gets out, what will people say about the? Will they say we abuse our daughter–in–law?”
Xavier gave a helpless laugh. “Mom, you’re exaggerating.”
“It’s Aveline who’s being outrageous, not me.
What does she want? Does she want half of your fortune? Does she want that clause added to the property agree- ment?”
“Mom, she hasn’t asked for that.”
“She hasn’t said it, but her actions are a threat to the, demanding that much money.
For the past few years, I thought she was sensible and well–behaved. After the engagement, she took good care of you, and I thought she’d be a perfect housewife. I never expected her to show her greedy true colors right after you got your marriage certificate.

If I had known, I would have preferred Josephine. Courtney told me Aveline had a bad heart, that she was after you for other reasons, but I didn’t believe it. Ugh, I was so wrong about her.”
Xavier frowned. “Mom, I have to board now. I’m hanging up.”
