“Mom, what do we do?”
Courtney looked at her. “Did you tell Xavier about your dad’s birthday and ask him and Aveline to come celebrate?”
“I did, but he ignored me when I said that.”
Courtney said, “It doesn’t matter. We’re still sending the invitation to the tomorrow.”
Josephine sniffled and asked, confused, “Mom, Xav already warned and threatened me like this. If we still send an invitation, isn’t that just provoking him?”
Courtney said impatiently, “Jacob is also Aveline’s father.”
“Also, for your dad’s project, let him be the one to talk about it. Xavier is probably just annoyed that you’re the one handling it.”
“Let Jacob go as Aveline’s father and see if that works.”
This way, they could test whether Xavier was just annoyed that Josephine saved him, or if he hated the entire Sutton family.
“Don’t be sad. No matter what, like I told you before, you’re the one who saved Xavier’s life. If Xavier dares to do anything to you, we’ll go make a scene in front of Rupert.”
Josephine replied, “But Leona already brought Bryan to Rupert and said I was the one who saved Xav, and Rupert didn’t do anything to Aveline.”
“Didn’t they say they’re reinvestigating?”
Don’t worry, Mom handled that matter perfectly back then. As long as that hospital keeps quiet, a new investigation won’t find a thing.”
“You should go rest now, don’t overthink it.
Xavier is no saint. He’s just used to saying those things to warn and threaten people.”
“Hmph, if he wants the person who saved him to be Aveline, then he should at least compensate us properly.”

Courtney calmed Josephine down, then went to find Jacob and told him to personally talk to Xavier about that government project.
“Josie and Xavier had a light. I think it’s better for you to go as Aveline’s father. Don’t mention Josic, just emphasize that you’re Aveline’s biological father and that Xavier is your son–in–law.”
Jacob was actually a bit afraid of Xavier. “Will that work?”
“If it doesn’t work with Xavier, then go to Rupert. Doesn’t he really like his granddaughter–in–law. Aveline? For Aveline’s sake, he should help you.”
“He still has clout in the political world.”
In the quiet of the night, Courtney sat alone on the sofa in her bedroom, talking on the phone.
The person on the other end of the line chuckled and said, “That’s right. Xavier’s love for Aveline is twisted. Even though she lied to him, he was still happy to get engaged and get a marriage certificate with her. You’re so smart, shouldn’t you have thought of that already?”
Courtney gritted her teeth, “If you knew, why did you use my daughter to go after Xavier?”
The person chuckled again. “Because she’s your daughter. I figured, being your child, she’d be just as good at seducing men as you are. I didn’t expect her to inherit so little of your skill. She couldn’t handle Xavier at all.”
“Just think about it, if Xavier didn’t like Aveline, would I have gone to all the trouble of having your daughter get close to him?”
Courtney’s face was filled with anger, but she touched her stomach, reined in her emotions, and said, “So what do we do now?”
“What are you worried about? Josephine is still Xavier’s savior. As long as we have that chip, we can control him.”
Courtney said, “But Xavier and Rupert are re–investigating.”
“They won’t find anything. Didn’t I tell you? That director won’t dare say a word.”
Courtney scoffed, “Are you underestimating what Xavier is capable of? With all his money and power, if he wants that director to talk, do you think the director can keep his mouth shut?”
“If that director dares to talk, he’ll go to jail. Do you think he wants to go to jail?”
Courtney probed, “You have something on that director?”
