Chapter 538
“Don’t be afraid of Xavier bankrupting the Sutton family. As long as Aveline is there, Jacob won’t go bankrupt.”
“Aveline is soft–hearted. If Eleanor Shaw Sutton goes to her and cries a little, she won’t do anything against her own father.”
Courtney said in a cold voice, “You’d better be right.”
The person replied, “Of course I’m right. Otherwise, how would your daughter have received all that jewelry and those famous paintings from Xavier over the last two years?”
“He even set her up as a director.”
“Dylan stealing Aveline’s design idea was idiotic, but what’s done is done. He’s already been kicked off the project team, so we might as well use this to make trouble for the’s big project.”
“Tell Dylan to remember to ask the for his termination letter.”
The next morning, Aveline was working in a small conference room when her phone rang. She looked at the screen and saw it was a call from her grandmother.
Aveline frowned slightly, because her grandmother hadn’t contacted her since their last falling
out.
Aveline had only seen her grandmother’s recent updates on her Social Feed; she hadn’t been staying at Jacob’s house, but at Devin’s.
This call… they weren’t calling to yell at her about Eileen’s case, were they?
Aveline considered it. It could be something important, and it was her grandmother, after all. So she answered, “Hello.”
It was Jacob’s voice. “Aveline, it’s me, Dad.”
Aveline’s expression immediately turned cold. Just as she was about to hang up, she heard Jacob say, “I have something important to tell you. I had to use your grandmother’s phone because you blocked my number.”
Aveline didn’t say anything, thinking that if this “important matter” was about her grandmother, she would listen. If not, she’d hang up.

Chapter 538
When she didn’t respond, Jacob continued, “The company’s been struggling lately, and I’m doing everything I can to hold on. Your mother helped me start it, after all. I’d rather die than let the company fail.”
Hearing him mention her mother, Aveline felt a pang in her chest and bit her lip in anger. “Jacob, how dare you bring up my mom?”
Jacob sighed. “Aveline, don’t be angry, just listen. Of course I loved your mom very much. But after she passed, I couldn’t live all alone. I had to let Courtney and Josephine move back into the Sutton home to keep me company.”
“Piss off. Jacob.”
With that, Aveline hung up the phone.
She then took a few deep breaths to calm herself.
Jacob sent a text: [I understand why you’re angry. But there were things between your mom and me that you don’t know about, because I didn’t want to ruin your image of her.]
[Anyway, your mom is gone, so let’s not dwell on the past. But the company can’t go under. It’s how I keep your mom’s memory alive.]
[There’s a government project coming up that’s a perfect fit for my company. Could you talk to Xavier or Rupert? If they just put in a good word with the government, I can get the contract.]
[And the company will be able to survive.]
Aveline found it incredible. How could Jacob be so shameless?
Then again, he was that shameless and had no conscience, which was why he’d hooked up with a woman like Courtney.
Aveline ignored him and put her phone on silent.
Xavier was in his office discussing work with a few project managers when his secretary knocked and entered. “Mr. Beltran, Mr. Sutton is here. He doesn’t have an appointment, but he insisted I let you know, saying you’d definitely see him, so…”
Xavier asked, “Jacob?”
“Yes.”
Xavier wondered why Jacob had come. Was it about Josephine, or Aveline?
“Let him in.”
