Aveline got into the back seat without a single glance at Xavier and shut the door.
Xavier glanced at the closed door and got into the passenger seat.
As he fastened his seatbelt, he asked, “Where to? Winslow Heights?”
Aveline sneered, “Xavier, could you be any more obvious?”
Xavier chuckled, “What makes you think I’m testing you? And what would I be testing?”
Aveline said coldly, “Parkview Estates.”
Valentina looked at Xavier in the front seat, then at Aveline, not understanding what the two adults were talking
about.
She leaned close to Aveline and said, “Auntie, did you move to Parkview Estates?”
Aveline patted her head. “Mhm, moving today.”
Valentina said happily, “That’s great! Uncle said if Auntie moves into the house at Parkview Estates, I can visit her often, and Auntie can make me lots of yummy food.”
Aveline scoffed to herself.
Right. If she moved to Parkview Estates, Valentina could visit her often. But if she moved back to Winslow Heights, it would be different. After all, Josephine lived at Winslow Heights. If Valentina went there, she would be in their
way.
Xavier remained silent in the front passenger seat.
Aveline didn’t want to look upset in front of Valentina. Valentina, of course, didn’t know she was in a bad mood and cheerfully told her about the kindergarten sports day.
Aveline listened, occasionally praising Valentina.
The car was filled with Valentina’s clear, childish voice, when a phone started ringing in the front.
Xavier quickly answered the phone, his voice low and pleasant. “Hello.”
Valentina stopped talking at that moment. Brielle had raised her well, so she knew not to interrupt when Xavier was on the phone.
After listening to the other person, Xavier said, “I can’t have dinner with you tonight.”
“I’m with Valentina. Have Gerald go with you.

Mhm.”
Then, he hung up.
Aveline’s expression was indifferent as she gazed out the window, feeling nothing.
Valentina asked, “Uncle, do you have a business dinner?”
Xavier said calmly, “It’s nothing.”
Valentina said considerately, “If you have a business dinner, you don’t have to stay with me. Auntie can keep me company.”
Xavier chuckled lightly. “So you only want your auntie, not your uncle?”
Valentina replied, “Of course not. Mom says that sometimes Dad and Uncle have business dinners after work, and I shouldn’t bother you.”
Xavier said, “It’s okay. Uncle will have dinner with you first.”
Valentina stopped talking to him and shifted toward Aveline. “Auntie, what are you looking at?
Oh, the cherry blossoms are so pretty.”
Aveline said lightly, “Yes, they’re very pretty.”
Valentina looked up at Aveline’s face. “Auntie, you’re even prettier than the cherry blossoms.”
Aveline’s heart warmed, and she smiled slightly. “Thank you, Valentina.”
Valentina said seriously, “I’m serious. Mom also says Auntie is the prettiest person she’s ever seen, even prettier than a movie star.”
Aveline replied, “Then thank your mom for me. It makes me very happy.”
Valentina saw that Aveline was still looking out the window, her voice calm, and thought she wasn’t taking the com- pliment seriously. So, she looked at the back of Xavier’s head in the front passenger seat and said:
“Uncle, you think Auntie is the prettiest too, right?”
Aveline: “.. ”
She hadn’t expected Valentina to ask Xavier that question, and it was too late to stop her.
