“What if I faked an injury?” Ava said. “I could make a big clatter in the kitchen by throwing some pots into the floor. I’ll scream, then you run into the dining room telling everyone that I fell and broke my wrist or something. Then you help me out while I’m sobbing and say that you’re sorry, but you need to take me to the hospital.”

I was honestly considering the idea, but Ava would have to see Alexander again. I couldn’t ask her to keep up the facade of an injury. That wasn’t fair to her.

“Thank you for trying to help, but I might just have to accept that I’m screwed,” I said and sighed again.

I gathered the tray, and Ava carefully picked up the pot of coffee. When we entered the dining room, I could immediately feel the growing tension in the air. Alexander and my father weren’t speaking. The two men were clutching their glasses of wine so hard that I was afraid that they were going to shatter in their hands. My mother and Skylar were staring daggers at each other. This surprised me since they had always been such good friends.

As soon as I put the tray on the table, someone knocked on the door.

My stomach swooped, and I intentionally avoided Alexander’s gaze. I swallowed past the lump in my throat as I walked on shaking legs to the front door. I wished that I didn’t have to open it, but if I didn’t, Skylar would just do it. She was determined to set up her son and me.

I held my breath as I swung open the door. My breath caught in my throat as I stared at the tall, handsome man standing in my doorway. I hadn’t seen Aidyn in years. He had always been cute, but in a nerdy way with his pocket protector and oversized glasses. But now he had a pair of black sleek glasses on his angular face. His dark red hair was styled, and his black shirt stretched across his broad chest.

My childhood friend Aidyn was all grown up. This was disorienting to see.

His bright green eyes filled with pleasure as they ran down my body. “Olivia,” he breathed out as if my name was a prayer. “You look more beautiful than ever.”

My back stiffened at his compliment. Aidyn’s voice was loud enough for Alexander to hear. I could practically feel his burning glare on the back of my neck, but I ignored him.

“Aidyn,” I said, my voice slightly strained. I knew that whatever I said would be picked apart by Alexander, so I needed to be careful. “It’s so great to see you. I hope you, um, have been well.

He took a step closer to me. I could feel the heat radiating off his tall frame. “I’m better now.” He nodded, making it obvious that I was the reason he was doing better.

I couldn’t help but blush. I opened my mouth to reply when I felt a presence. The smell of freshly chopped wood filled my senses, and without even having to turn around, I knew that Alexander was behind me.

But Aidyn didn’t notice him. My old friend seemed only to have eyes for me.

“How have you been?” Aidyn asked.
