It looked like vampires lived there.

I shook my head at myself. I was being silly.

I parked Alexander’s car under an iron frame structure. Whoever did the owner’s gardening was extremely talented. The property was surrounded with clipped shrubs, vibrant flowers, and there was even a stone water fountain in the middle of the lush lawn, happily spurting water.

Even though the grounds were beautiful, the hair on the back of my neck rose as I looked around. It was too quiet for my liking. I was used to the constant noise of New York City. Silence made me weary. I didn’t think Alexander would like it here either.

Alexander took my hand and led me to the door. I thought that he would knock, but he produced a key out of his pocket and opened the glass door. When I stepped over the threshold, my stomach swooped. My hand became clammy in Alexander’s.

The ceilings were vaulted, and I couldn’t help but look up as he led the way to the living room. There was an enormous white couch in the middle of the room, a plasma TV mounted on the wall that was almost as big as the couch, and an electric fireplace that Alexander switched on with a

remote.

We sat down in the middle of the couch. My body felt like it was sinking into the soft fabric. I didn’t like how comfortable the cotton felt against my skin. It seemed like the couch was trapping me in the house, luring me in with a false sense of calmness.

Alexander looked right at home. He rested his elbow on the back of the couch and faced me.

“I brought you here because I wanted to let you know that I’ve never been good at sharing,” he whispered, breaking the silence.

I tilted my head to the side as I attempted to decipher his cryptic words. When I finally understood what he meant, my jaw clenched.

“I’m not a toy,” I snapped.

Alexander’s face softened. “I’m very aware of that. I was merely trying to make my intentions clear. I know that your parents approve of Aidyn. I wanted to let you know that I’m a one woman kind of guy when I’m dating someone, and I expect my partner to be faithful, too.”

My shoulder slumped as my anger drained out of me. “I am,” I assured him. “I have no interest in dating Aidyn. He’s like a brother to me. He always has been. I’ve never been attracted to him, even before I met you.”

But this didn’t seem to calm Alexander’s fears.

“Do you have plans to see Aidyn again?” he pressed.

I leaned away from him as annoyance flared inside of me. “Of course not! When would I have made plans with him? You were there for our two minute conversation. I don’t even have Aidyn’s number.” I paused as my breathing became more labored. “In fact, if I see him on the street, I’d avoid him. Are you happy now?” I crossed my arms tightly.

Finally, Alexander seemed to relax, and the corners of his lips twitched despite himself.

He put his arm around me and pulled me against his warm, hard body.

Part of me wanted to put up a fight after the appalling way that he had just treated me, but I couldn’t resist him. I leaned my head against his muscular chest and sighed in frustration.
