When She Turns Her Back (Teresa and Charles) novel Chapter 141

Chapter 141

O

Charles tried to lay out his reasoning, but Monica just didn’t get it. She stared at him, stubborn and earnest. That’s not true.

Mom and Dad said Aunt Teresa’s a Sullivan, and as long as she wants to come back, the Sullivan Mansion will always be her home. So her real home is here, not with you.

Charles’s face fell when he heard that. He looked at Monica, his eyes complicated, and for a moment, he had no idea what to say.

Monica’s just sticking up for Teresa because she really loves her, Charles thought to himself. As her uncle, what right do I have to argue with a little kid?

When Charles stayed quiet, Monica spoke up again, her voice stubborn. I’m not letting you take Aunt Teresa.

Teresa stood off to the side, watching Monica defend her, and her eyes started to well up.

But if what Charles said was true, and he really knew where the marriage certificate was, Teresa was willing to make the trip.

So, before Charles lost his patience, Teresa scooped Monica up and set her down in the middle of the living room.

Monica, we have to go back for a bit, but I’ll be right back. How about I ask Betty to make your favorite fish, okay?Teresa said softly.

Tears streamed down Monica’s cheeks as she clung tightly to Teresa’s clothes, refusing to let go or say a word.

Teresa’s heart twisted seeing Monica like this. She hugged Monica and soothed her gently. Monica, be good. I always keep my promises.

Monica leaned into Teresa’s arms, sniffled, and said, Okay, but you have to come back soon, or I’ll get Mom and Dad to come find you.

Teresa ruffled Monica’s hair, her chest softening sweetly. I will.

With that, Monica reached up, gave Teresa a quick kiss on the cheek, and said softly, See you soon, Aunt Teresa.

Teresa’s eyes went red, and tears spilled down her cheeks as she bit her lip. See you soon,” she replied

As Teresa was about to leave, Charles came back in.

He crouched down in front of Monica and softly tousled her hair. Monica, how about coming over to our home next time? Yolanda will be there, too. You two can play together.

Monica stepped back, staring at Charles angrily, but she didn’t say yes.

Seeing Monica’s rejection, Charles didn’t say anything else and just smiled faintly.

As they stepped out of the Sullivan Mansion, Charles held open the front passenger door for Teresa.

She gave the door a quick look and said, No, I’ll sit in the back.

Charles immediately stepped over and blocked the back door with his body.

Teresa frowned.

Charles didn’t say a word, just stood firm, making it clear she had to sit up front.

Realizing they were just wasting time, Teresa finally gave in and got into the front seat.

But just as she settled in, Charles leaned in, half his body in the car. Teresa tensed up immediately.

Charles reached over, buckled her seatbelt, and as he was about to pull back, he noticed small spots of blood seeping through her white long sleeve.

Charles paused, then reached out to grab her arm.

Teresa startled, yanking her hand back and giving him a guarded look. What are you doing?

Charles hesitated, frowning at her reaction. Your hand is bleeding. Let me see.

Teresa shot him a cold glare. I don’t need your help.

Charles crouched down by the car, reaching for her arm again, but she jerked away. Charles, I told you. I don’t need it.”

Her tone was harsh, and she was clearly upset.

Charles’s face was halfhidden in the shifting light, his eyes lingering on Teresa, full of mixed emotions.

After a long silence, he finally asked, Are you afraid of me? Or are you just shutting me out?

Charles couldn’t remember her ever being like this before. She’d always leaned into his touch. But now, everything was different.

Teresa turned her face away, her eyes cold and distant as she called him by his full name. Charles, let’s just stick to how we used to be. You don’t have to care about me, and I won’t care about you either.

Charles didn’t say yes or no. In the dim light, his face was hard to read. Teresa couldn’t tell what he was thinking.

After a few seconds, Charles spoke again. Is it because you think I was too distant before? Is that why you’re blaming me now?

She gave a little laugh, almost mocking. Does it even matter anymore?

Charles shook his head, his voice soft. Maybe it does.”

Teresa was getting fed up with him going on and on. Are you going back or not? If you’re not, I’m getting out.

Charles stared at her for a long moment before finally straightening up. Once he got in the car, he drove off.

Before they got to Logan Manor, Charles stopped at a supermarket.

Teresa had no idea what he was up to, so she just stayed in the car.

Charles got out, opened the passenger door for her, and asked, Aren’t you coming?

Teresa blinked, still confused. What are we even buying?

Charles said, Something for Grandpa.

Hearing that, Teresa finally got out of the car.

They headed into the supermarket together. Teresa wandered around the gift section, but Charles was nowhere to be seen.

After picking out a present, Teresa scanned the aisles for Charles.

Teresa spotted him at a shelf, reaching for something. When he walked over, she saw it was a box of condoms,

Charles didn’t bother to hide it, just held it out in plain sight, totally unfazed that Teresa saw him.

They were about to get divorced, and they hadn’t had sex in three or four months. Obviously, those condoms were for Naomi.

Teresa glanced at them quickly before looking away.
