Troy sat at the edge of the bed, his whole body stiffening as Teresa spoke. Even he could tell what she meant she wanted him out of
here.
>
Is she really kicking me out?‘ Troy thought, suddenly feeling like he didn’t belong.
But Troy wasn’t about to leave. He frowned and said, “I’m not busy. I’ll stay here with you. You’re sick, and I just can’t leave you alone.”
Teresa looked at him, her face unreadable, her voice soft but distant. “Go home. Wendy’s a girl. It’ll be easier for her to take care of me.
Troy’s frown deepened as he protested, “But you told me last night you would—”
He wanted to remind her that she’d let him into her heart–just last night, she’d agreed to let him stay by her side.
But before he could get the words out, Teresa gently cut him off. “I had a fever last night, wasn’t really myself. Please, Mr. Hamilton, don’t dwell on it.”
Troy knew Teresa was trying to push him away, but he couldn’t just leave. “I’m not going anywhere. If you want Wendy to keep you company, that’s fine. I’ll be here in the hospital, and you can just act like I’m invisible.”
Just then, Wendy walked into the hospital room, placing the bouquet of lilies she brought on the bedside table and setting the fruit
basket down on the coffee table.
Seeing how determined Troy was to stay, something clicked inside Wendy–she suddenly understood just how much Teresa meant to
him.
Someone as proud as Troy, now standing here so humble and vulnerable in front of Teresa… it was almost hard to believe.
Leo’s eyes had been fixed on Wendy from the moment she walked into the room.
There was a straightforward admiration in his gaze–nothing hidden, nothing awkward, just honest appreciation that didn’t cross any
lines.
Wendy sensed his gaze, glanced his way, and gave Leo a polite nod of greeting.
Seeing that Troy wasn’t budging, Teresa sighed in resignation. “Fine, do whatever you want.”
She thought to herself, if he wouldn’t go, she could always find her own way to make him leave.
Then, turning to Wendy, Teresa said, “Wendy, I want to go for a walk.”
Wendy quickly moved to the bedside, bending down to help Teresa up.
But just then, Troy, who had been watching Teresa closely, asked in a low, concerned voice, “You’re still not well. Where are you trying to go?”
Teresa threw back the covers and looked right at Troy. “I’m going to check on Charles. He spent all night with Yolanda, so it’s my turn to take over. The guy needs a break.”
She said that on purpose, just to push Troy’s buttons.
Really, all she wanted was for Troy to get out–nothing more, nothing less.
But as Teresa started to climb off the bed, Troy suddenly seized her wrist, his gaze icy and intense as he stared her down. “Teresa, you’re still sick. I’m not letting you go see them.”
Teresa didn’t even try to pull away. She faced him openly and said straight to his face, “Charles is my husband, Yolanda is my daughter. If I’m not supposed to see them, who should I see? You? And what are you to me, exactly?”
The air in the hospital room practically crackled with tension as Teresa and Troy faced off.
Leo finally tore his gaze away from Wendy and looked at Troy. With just one glance, he could tell–Troy was genuinely furious.
As for Teresa? She was no less angry.
Troy didn’t just hold on–he tightened his grip on Teresa’s hand, his dark, razor–sharp eyes locking with hers as he leaned in and spoke

in a low, almost growling voice. “That’s right, Teresa. You should see me–because I’m your lover. The only one you have.”
Never in her wildest dreams did Teresa expect Troy to say something like that. She was frozen in shock.
If it were just the two of them, she could’ve pretended she never heard any of it.
But now, they had an audience–Leo and Wendy were also in the room.

And Leo was Troy’s good friend. Yet here Troy was, making such a scene in front of his own buddy, like he didn’t care about pride or dignity at all.
Teresa stared at him, completely at a loss. “Troy, you…”
Troy tried to pull her into his arms, but just as he got close, all Teresa could think of was him kissing Naomi.
A surge of resistance flooded her, and she shoved Troy away hard, then jumped down from the bed.
Standing barefoot on the cold floor, she turned to Troy and said, “Forget about last night. Those roles you think you have in my life–I never agreed to any of it.”
With that, she slipped on her shoes, took Wendy’s hand, and said, “Come on, With
Wendy, let’s go.
Wendy had no idea what had just happened, so she simply followed Teresa’s lead.
As the two women started to leave, Leo suddenly called out, “Teresa, are you sure you’re not misunderstanding Troy? If something’s bothering you, you really need to talk it out with him. Honestly, I know Troy better than anyone–he seriously only has eyes for you.”
Teresa came to a halt, hesitated for a moment, then looked back at Leo. “Mr. Gilbert, thank you for being here today. I appreciate it, really. And I’m also grateful to Mr. Hamilton for coming. But as for misunderstandings- there are none between me and Mr. Hamilton.”
As Teresa was turning to leave, Leo looked like he wanted to say something else, but Troy called out to stop him. “Leo, just forget it.”
Leo frowned, worry written all over his face. “Teresa must be misunderstanding you. I’ll go talk to her and clear things up.”
Troy grabbed Leo’s hand, his gaze dropping as a bitter smile played across his lips. “It doesn’t matter. From start to finish, the only person in her heart has ever been Charles.”
Leo still looked uneasy. “Troy, you should really go
talk to her in person.”
Troy shook his head and looked over at the hospital room door, where Teresa’s figure was already long gone. A bleak, defeated smile crossed his face. “Leo, it’s over. I’ve lost.”
Leo shot back, frustrated, “Come on, don’t say that! You’re Troy–how could you possibly lose? That’s impossible!”
