Chapter 200

After Troy left that night, Teresa couldn’t sleep at all, tossing and turning. Charles’s promise to return had vanished too, nothing but a fleeting illusion.
When the nurse came in for her morning rounds, Teresa found herself even more wide awake.
Teresa grabbed her phone, started scrolling through videos, and out of nowhere, Naomi’s account came up again.
She’d flagged it as “not interested” before, but the app stubbornly kept recommending it anyway.
Still, Teresa watched the video all the way through.
Naomi’s post was a mashup of several short video clips.
༤།
The first was Naomi filming herself up close, her face streaked with tears. You could barely make out the vague figure of a man in the background.
Obviously, that guy was Charles, and it looked like he was giving her a shoulder massage.
The second clip showed Charles wearing a bathrobe, casually walking toward the bathroom.
The third was Charles with his back to the camera, slipping off his robe. Just as half his bare back came into instantly.
All three clips were edited together into a longer video, set to a Sweet background track.

The caption read: [Felt so crappy today–chose the wrong direction for my research and got scolded by my but you didn’t pick up. As soon as I messaged you that I was feeling down, you instantly replied saying you’d come right over. The moment I saw you, all my grievances just exploded. But then you told me, “Don’t cry,” and somehow I calmed down. You said you’d cheer me up, though I didn’t expect this was what you had in mind, Still, I just love it when you pull off big things without saying a word.]
‘Ugh, I just couldn’t stop myself—I had to go over that video, frame by frame, Teresa thought, getting sucked into the analysis.
‘So… looks like Charles somehow cheered Naomi up in bed, Teresa mused, fighting the urge to crack a smile at her own conclusion.
After watching that video, Teresa locked her phone.
When she thought of Charles’s promise to come back last night, she just felt like laughing at herself.
‘Naomi mentions she’s feeling down, and he drops everything, rushing over just to devote himself to her,‘ Teresa thought.
‘Meanwhile, he’s probably forgotten all about his feverish wife still sitting here, Teresa mused.
Teresa got up and freshened up. Once she was all cleaned up, she thought about heading over to check on her daughter.
As Teresa reached the pediatric ward’s VIP section, she was still searching for Yolanda’s room when Yolanda’s cheerful voice rang out, “Grandma Ava, I missed you so much!”
At the sound, Teresa’s steps faltered for a moment.
She didn’t catch what Ava said in reply.
Even so, Teresa kept moving toward Yolanda’s room
Teresa stood in the doorway, hesitating, not knocking right away.
She just wanted to peek in, make sure Yolanda was alright. As long as her little girl was okay, that was enough for Teresa to breathe easy.
She poked her head in, only to see Ava spoon–feeding Yolanda.
At first, everything seemed perfectly normal. But then Teresa watched as Ava chewed the food in her own mouth, then placed it back anto the spoon and held it up to Yolanda.
All the while, Ava was gently coaxing, “Yolanda, be a good girl. Eat the meal Aya made for you, and all your sickness will disappear

Teresa frowned, thinking, Yolanda will surely refuse if she
sees that.”
But instead, to Teresa’s surprise, Yolanda just opened her mouth, ready to accept the food.

Just as that spoonful of food—the very one Ava had already chewed–was about to go into Yolanda’s mouth, Teresa finally lost it and
kicked the hospital room door open.
At the same time, she shouted, “Yolanda, don’t eat that!”
Yolanda was stunned, just staring blankly at her mom as she walked in through the doorway.
Without hesitation, Teresa strode right up to Ava and, in one swift motion, knocked the bowl out of her hands.
Soup and food went flying, drenching Ava from head to toe.
Before Ava could process what happened, Teresa barked, “Are you disgusting or what? Is this really how you feed a kid?”
Ava finally came to her senses, snatching up some tissues to wipe her clothes while retorting, “What’s so disgusting about it? Naomi and Ethan grew up the exact same way!”
Teresa almost never got this mad, but this time she didn’t hold back at all. “Guess that means Ethan and Naomi picked up your nasty habits too.”
Ava flared up, jumping to her feet and shaking her finger at Teresa. “Seriously, what’s your problem? I got up at six AM to make this breakfast–been at it for two whole hours! And you just come in and knock it all over? Then you go insulting my son and daughter? Teresa, do I owe you or something?”
Right as she finished speaking, the hospital room door was pushed open from the outside.
Mr. Gould walked in.
Ever since he’d heard Yolanda was sick, he hadn’t been able to make time visit. Today he finally manage only to walk right into a scene like this—now that was something he never saw coming.

As soon as he stepped into the room, Mr. Gould caught Teresa and Ava locked in a heated standoff.
He walked over, naturally taking Ava’s side, and asked, “What’s going on here?”
Ava immediately started ranting, “Teresa just burst in out of nowhere and knocked over the breakfast I worked so hard to make for Yolanda. She didn’t even show a shred of gratitude–instead, she went and called Naomi and Ethan disgusting!”

Teresa stood off to the side, keeping quiet. She didn’t even care to explain herself to Mr. Gould–he simply wasn’t worth the effort.
