Chapter 247

When Troy heard the nurse say Rose had woken up, he didn’t waste another second arguing with Hector–he hurried off without looking back.
Teresa watched Troy’s retreating figure and actually felt relieved he was gone.
‘If Troy had kept hanging around, who knows what else Hector would have blurted out, she thought to herself.
She gently pulled her hand back and took a step away from Hector. “Hector, I should head back now,” she told him.
Hector stood up. “Let me walk you out.”
Teresa instinctively shook her head. “Why don’t you get some rest, Hector? I can go back by myself.”
But Hector insisted, “I just wouldn’t feel right if you walked alone. Please, let me see you off.”
‘If I don’t let him come with me, he probably won’t even let me leave, Teresa thought, finally giving in.
Hector walked Teresa to the Sullivan Mansion before finally driving off.
He didn’t say anything else before leaving.
Teresa felt a wave of relief–at least he hadn’t tried to start another awkward conversation.
When she got back to the mansion, the place was empty except for the servants.
Teresa felt completely drained, so she headed straight upstairs.
After a quick shower, she just wanted to crash and get some sleep.
But just as she was about to fall asleep, her phone started ringing.
She picked up without hesitation, not bothering to check who it was.
“Hello,” Teresa murmured, her voice still hoarse with sleep.
Monica’s urgent voice burst through the line. “Aunt Teresa, Yoyo fell down! She’s conscious, but she can’t seem to stand up!”
In a split second, Teresa’s drowsiness vanished completely.
She bounced off her bed, wide awake and ready to move.
She rushed out to her car and sped off to the kindergarten.
When she arrived, a bunch of kids were standing around, pointing at her. “Yolanda’s family is here!” one of them shouted.
Teresa didn’t bother to explain her identity–she walked straight inside.
The kids quickly stepped aside when they saw an adult coming.
Yolanda wasn’t unconscious, but she was lying on the ground, sobbing her eyes out.
A few teachers were standing nearby, looking worried but not daring to touch her.
Without hesitation, and forgetting about her recent surgery, Teresa scooped Yolanda up in her arms and strode out of the school.
In the cab on the way over, Teresa couldn’t stop worrying about Yolanda.
She gently squeezed Yolanda’s fingers and asked, “Does it hurt? Can you feel this?”
Yolanda was crying her heart out, but she shook her head and said. “It doesn’t hurt, it’s just numb.”
Even though she was nestled in her mother’s arms. Yolanda still answered all of Teresa’s questions obediently.
Hearing this, Teresa felt a pang of anxiety squeeze her heart.
Out of sheer worry, Teresa told the driver to hurry.

Yolanda snuggled closer and muttered, “Mommy, my tummy hurts, and my head hurts too.”
When Teresa heard her daughter say that, she felt even more flustered and at a loss.
Soon enough, the taxi arrived at the hospital.
Teresa jumped out with Yolanda in her arms and sprinted toward the Emergency Department, not even bothering to pay the driver.
Since she was a pediatric surgeon herself, Teresa followed right into the emergency room as Yolanda was brought in.
After a round of tests and X–rays, there wasn’t a scratch on Yolanda–she was totally fine.
But Teresa, still worried she might’ve missed something, asked the nurse to draw blood and check her blood pressure and sugar levels.
But the results were all normal, which should’ve been reassuring, though Teresa couldn’t quite shake off her anxiety.
Yolanda could hear the doctors chatting, but she kept on saying, “Mommy, I feel like I’m gonna throw up, and my head really hurts!”
Teresa turned to watch Yolanda lying in the hospital bed. Her cheeks were rosy, and her big round eyes sparkled wide open–she didn’t look sick at all. ‘How is this the face of a sick kid?‘ Teresa wondered.
Thinking it over, Teresa realized with a jolt, ‘It’s just an act–she’s pretending to be sick.’
Pretending to be helpless, Teresa put on her most serious face and told the ER doctors, “Alright then, I suppose we’ll have to run some… extra tests.”
The doctors looked baffled. “What kind of extra tests exactly?”
Teresa kept up the act. “Simple–we’ll slice open her tummy and carefully poke around inside until we figure out what’s hurting.”
Before the doctors could even wrap their heads around that suggestion, Yolanda suddenly blurted out in a panic, “Mommy, can we just go home now?”
That little outburst was all the proof Teresa needed–she was now sure Yolanda had been faking the whole thing.
She turned to the doctors and said, “Would you mind giving us a moment? I’d like to talk to my daughter alone.”
After she spoke, the doctors quietly left the room.
Once the door closed, Teresa turned to Yolanda, her voice low and serious. “Why did you lie?”
Yolanda could tell Teresa had caught on, so she dropped the act with a scowl and snapped, “Why do you even care?”
Teresa was a little surprised by her daughter’s attitude, but she didn’t let it go. Instead, she asked, “Were you bullying your classmates again at school?”
Yolanda stuck out her lower lip and protested, “I didn’t!”
Teresa raised her voice, pressing her, “Then who was spitting on people? And who called someone a bastard, huh?”
Yolanda shot her a glare and said, “Why do you always have to butt in?”
Teresa couldn’t take it anymore. Grinding her teeth, she snapped, “At this point, you totally deserve a smack.”
But Yolanda just sneered, totally unfazed. “Then do it!”
She even shoved her face closer, taunting, “Well? Go on, hit me!”
Seeing her daughter act so cocky, Teresa lost her temper–she raised her hand and slapped Yolanda hard across the face.
Yolanda was stunned for a split second, then suddenly burst out crying, bawling at the top of her lungs.
At the same time, she started pounding Teresa’s stomach with her little fists, yelling, “Bad mommy! You’re a terrible mommy!”
The first couple of hits caught Teresa totally off guard.
When she finally reacted, a sharp pain tore through her abdomen, making her let out a muffled groan.
