Chapter 257
Troy’s words hit Wendy where it hurt.
Teresa spun around, rage flashing in her eyes as she snapped at Troy, “Troy, just shut up already!”
Leo knew exactly what Troy was up to, but deep down he couldn’t shake the worry–it might all just blow up in their faces.

Wendy’s fingers were still locked tightly around the knife handle, while Teresa’s hand kept dripping blood onto the floor, the crimson pooling at her feet.
But Troy wouldn’t let up. He raised his voice, slicing through the tension. “You’ve got time to point that knife at your closest friend, but you can’t figure out how to collect hard evidence? Or how to push for George to get a longer sentence? If I were you, George would already be in cold metal handcuffs, not you standing here bawling and hurting others. If I was dying, I’d make damn sure he paid the price before I went…”
Teresa couldn’t stop Troy from stoking the flames. She could only watch Wendy anxiously, hoping that she’d at least take Troy’s words to
heart.
Even though Troy’s words were harsh, he wasn’t
wrong.
Wendy just stood there, dazed, her eyes hollow as she stared ahead.
It seemed like she finally took it in. Slowly, she let her hand fall, releasing her grip on the knife.
Teresa quickly shoved the knife away, trying to hide it.
Troy saw her move and instantly reached over, grabbing her blood–soaked hand firmly in his.
Then he turned to Wendy and said, “Listen, as long as you’re alive, anything can happen. But if you’re dead, that’s the end–nothing changes.”
With that, he pulled Teresa out of the room.
Teresa stumbled after him, her steps unsteady.
Troy didn’t slow down for even a moment–he whisked Teresa into the elevator and out of the apartment complex, barely giving her a
chance to catch her breath.
He took her straight to a nearby clinic and insisted the doctor clean out and bandage Teresa’s bleeding hand.
In the exam room, Teresa winced as the doctor tended to her wound, her brow furrowing against the pain. She couldn’t stop a low, involuntary moan from escaping.
Troy caught the look on her face–he felt a pang in his chest, but his words came out merciless: “You did something dumb, so just suck it up and deal with it.”
Teresa glared up at him, frustration etched across her face. “Troy, you—”
Troy met her gaze, his face set in a serious look and his tone firm. “If you want to keep others safe, you’d better learn to look out for yourself first”
Teresa stayed silent, hanging her head, feeling utterly ashamed of herself.
Once the doctor finished treating her wound, Troy settled up at the front desk.
They walked out in complete silence, neither saying a word.
But once they were outside. Troy leaned in, unable to hold back anymore. He asked, “Are you mad at me?”
Teresa shook her head. “No, I’m not upser. Honestly, you were right”
Troy could tell she really meant it, but he didn’t want to keep pushing or make her feel worse.
So he switched topics. “Leo’s with her, so she should be okay.”
Teresa nodded, feeling a little more at ease. “Mor–hunos,”

Finally, Troy couldn’t hold back anymore. He stopped and turned to Teresa. “New Year’s Day is coming up. My mom wants to invite you over to our place.”
Teresa hesitated, looking a bit uneasy. “I’m about to take my grad school entrance exams, so I really appreciate your mom’s offer, but…”
Troy called her out right away. “The exam’s on December 25th, and New Year’s Day is January 1st. What’s the conflict?”
Teresa knew Troy was stubborn–there was no point in going around in circles with him on this.
She thought for a second, then replied, “We’ll talk about it when the time comes.”
Troy saw right through her attempt to slip away, and wasn’t having it. “If you try to bail, I’ll just come and kidnap you myself.”
Teresa stayed silent.
Suddenly, they heard cheers rising up ahead as they walked.
crowd had gathered, and the lights were flashing like crazy. Everyone was shouting and buzzing with excitement, but Teresa and Troy had no idea what was going on.
Without even thinking, they pushed their way through the crowd to get a better look.
Standing at the edge of the escalator, they looked down at the riverbank below. There, they saw a huge, jaw–dropping proposal scene.
It was a sea of pink flowers, with a massive screen playing a slideshow of memories, and balloons and streamers fluttering in the wind.
Right then, the guy was heading toward the girl, arms full of roses.
As soon as she took the bouquet, he picked up the mic.
Cheered on by all their friends and family, he opened up about how much he loved her and promised he’d spend the rest of his life by
her side.
“Babe, standing here in front of you tonight, maybe I seem a little reckless or maybe even awkward, but I just can’t let this moment pass by. I want you to know how much I love you, and I want to marry you–just live a simple, happy life together.”
“Will you marry me, sweetheart?”
As soon as he finished, the crowd erupted into cheers.
The crowd started chanting, “Say yes! Say yes!”
The girl blushed deeply, and with everyone egging her on, she finally nodded, her voice soft but steady: “Yes, I do.”
He gently slipped the ring onto her finger, and the two of them hugged and kissed while the crowd cheered even louder.
Teresa stood at the top of the river steps, looking down and soaking in every detail of the proposal scene unfolding below.
The heartwarming atmosphere was just too much–her eyes stung with tears before she even realized it, and the next thing she knew, they were rolling down her cheeks.
Watching all this made her think back on her own five–year marriage to Charles. She had always been the one reaching out, putting in the effort he never once surprised her or made anything feel special.
There wasn‘ Leven the bare minimum of give–and take between them.
Troy couldn’t sand seeing Teresa in tears. He leaned in and murmured. “Why the tears? Trust me, what waits for you down the road is a million times better than this—you’re going to have it all one day?
Teresa quickly wiped at her cheeks, turning as if to say she wanted to leave, but just as she pivoted, her gaze met Charles’s across the sea of people–an unexpected, electric eye contact
