Charles didn’t straighten up; he kept his head lowered, his gaze locked on Teresa. He could see she was faking calm, even though she was clearly rattled. He couldn’t help but chuckle, “What’s wrong? Are you scared of me?”
All these years, Charles had never seen even a hint of fear in Teresa’s eyes.
But tonight, he saw it.
Is this really happening? Charles felt a strange sense of unfamiliarity, and for a moment, he was a little dazed.
Charles had seen his fair share of women–most of them were all about buttering him up, fawning over him, doing whatever it took to get on his good side.
Even back in the day. Teresa was the same–always lowering herself, never daring to stand tall around him.
When Charles spoke, Teresa slowly turned her face back toward him, her expression open and unflinching as she met his eyes head–on
She looked right at him, her voice calm and unwavering. “Charles, I’m not scared of you, I just don’t see the need for this between us.”
Charles’s eyes narrowed, curiosity flickering in his gaze. “Why’s that?” he pressed.
Teresa looked at him; he seemed so unfamiliar to her now.
After a brief pause, she finally said, “Charles, I just want you to treat me like you always did.”
‘I don’t see any reason for things to change between us, Teresa thought.
Charles frowned, arching his brow a little. “What, you don’t want me to be a bit warmer with you?”
Teresa shot him down without missing a beat. “Nope.”
The light faded in Charles’s eyes, and he didn’t say anything more. But when his gaze landed on Teresa’s soft, rosy lips, something inside him stirred–a sudden, almost uncontrollable urge to kiss her.
That thought barely had time to register before his body moved on its own, closing the distance between them without him even realizing it.
Charles leaned forward, hovering barely an inch away from Teresa, ready to claim her lips as his.
Teresa seemed to catch on to what Charles was about to do, and just in time, she said, “If we don’t get to the hospital now, Yolanda’s probably going to start crying.”
At her words, Charles abruptly froze.
He lowered his head, studying Teresa in silence, his eyes full of curiosity and scrutiny..
Seeing him stay silent and not even bother to straighten up, Teresa let out an amused chuckle. “Charles, does Naomi even know what you’re up to in here with me?”
Only then did Charles shift, his body lifting just a bit–but he still blocked the outside light, keeping Teresa completely wrapped in his shadow.
He looked down at her, her face barely visible in the dimness, and his voice came out almost as a whisper. “Naomi doesn’t need to know any of this.
Teresa snorted dismissively.
Charles–looked at her, puzzled. “What’s so funny?”
Teresa lifted her chin, meeting his eyes without flinching. “Honestly, all men are pretty much the same.”
Charles couldn’t help but laugh. “Oh, really? How many guys have you actually been with to say that?”
Teresa realized her words might’ve gone a bit too far–she could totally see how that might push Charles’s buttons.
Thankfully, though, Charles didn’t seem mad at all.

Not wanting to put her foot in her mouth again, Teresa just clammed up.

Seeing that Teresa had nothing more to say, Charles slowly straightened up, closed the car door with a soft click, and only then got behind the wheel.
As soon as the car drove off, a tall shadow stretched long under the streetlights–it was Troy, who had doubled back.
Even though he was still pissed at Teresa, the more he thought about it, the more he worried Charles might give her a hard time. That’s what made him turn around and come back after all.
But the second he returned, he caught Charles and Teresa standing way too close together by the passenger side. The vibe between them was downright intimate.
Teresa didn’t resist Charles at all—she didn’t push him away, didn’t snap, didn’t even so much as frown.
Seeing that, Troy was so mad, he actually slapped himself right across the face.
But that still didn’t help, so he yelled at himself, “Troy, you’re such a pig.”
Even after that, he didn’t feel any better–in fact, it just made him even more frustrated.
At that moment, everything just grated on his nerves–nothing looked right, nothing felt the least bit comfortable.
Even a stray cat passing by got snapped at. “What are you looking at? Get back to your litter box!”
The cat
bolted away in a flash.
Troy turned and stomped back to his car, slamming the door shut so hard it echoed. He threw himself into the driver’s seat, fuming in silence.
Just then, his phone buzzed–it was a WhatsApp notification.
Troy grabbed his phone, and sure enough, it was a message from Teresa.
The second he saw her name, all the anger and frustration that had been weighing him down just vanished.
But when he read the message, those clouds rolled right back in.
The message from Teresa read: “Let Wendy know I went home for something. I’ll visit her tomorrow.”
Not a single mention of Troy. Not even a hint that she cared about him.
Troy didn’t reply to her. Instead, he pulled up Teresa’s profile, finger hovering over the “Delete Contact” option.
For a split second, the anger inside him burned so hot he seriously thought about erasing her from his life right then and there.
But he just couldn’t go through with it. No matter how mad he was, he couldn’t bring himself to let her go.
‘What if I delete her and she never adds me back?‘ he wondered, anxiety creeping in.
Out of sight, out of mind–Troy gave up, locked his screen, and chucked his phone onto the passenger seat.
Meanwhile, Charles was driving, and Teresa used the moment to text Troy.
Once she sent the message, she kept checking her phone, waiting for his
She waited and waited, but Troy never wrote back.
At that moment, a knot of worry twisted in Teresa’s stomach.
She couldn’t help but think, “Troy’s probably mad at me
