One sat cross–legged, holding a newspaper, while the other munched from a can of Stackers, entertaining himself with the
They didn’t notice me immediately, but when they did, it was the one with the can who sprang to life like he’d just seen Santa Claus in July.
“Holy sweet fuck, Sleeping Beauty is awake! We’ve been waiting for ages, Ms. Green.”
The guy with the paper–moodier, calmer, colder–just glanced up with a stare that felt like an X–ray. And without a word,” he went back to reading..
“Judging from how long you were in bed, I’d say you slept well.” The can guy continued.
He glanced down at his tin. “I’d love to offer you this as it is our first official meeting, but boss said not to give anything I’ve touched or eaten. Which is rude, because I’m delightful.” He took out a piece from the can and slowly chewed while staring
at me.
What boss was he talking about? Void?
“Who are you?” I asked with furrowed brows, my hand holding onto the rail in case I needed to turn and bolt.
The smile that stretched his face looked two parts charming, three parts unhinged.
“Oh, forgive my manners.” He slapped himself on the forehead. “Name’s Eric. And the newspaper wallflower over there is Miles.”
Miles gave a small nod. “Hi, Rali.” His eyes were glued to his paper like he was reading stock reports on how much pain I’d endured.
Eric continued. “Sorry you had to wake up in the boss‘ absence. Trust me, he agonized over leaving you. But he had to handle something really important, love.”
Miles surprisingly threw a glare at him.
“But not to worry, he left you in our care and ordered us–ordered–to make sure you’re pampered like an endangered princess. If you so much as whisper to him that you weren’t properly fed, I might as well dig my own grave. Come now. The table’s steaming, and so is my anxiety.”
He started towards the dining area.
“He’ll kill you,” Miles mumbled.
“Oh, please. He’s not here, is he?” Eric rolled his eyes, then turned to me with a big smile. “You won’t tell him I called you ‘love‘, will you?” He winked at me.
My brain hadn’t caught up with the morning. Everything felt dipped in unreality.
However, I followed Eric to the dining, wincing when my legs hurt.
Behind me, I heard Miles chuckle, and though I wasn’t sure why he did, it made my neck flush in shame.
The table was filled with different aromas and covered dishes. Eric started uncovering them.

“You work for him?” I asked, pausing behind a seat.
“Clearly, love. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be here. Void doesn’t keep company.”
I looked around. “Do you live with him?”

“What? Hell no. He actually hates that we’re here now. Unfortunately, we have to when we get emergencies and he doesn’t feel like driving to any of our rendezvous spots.”
I swallowed tersely. This was real. I was in The Torturer’s apartment. And he fucked me yesterday, into the night.
“Is it just the two of you? That works for him?”
“Huh?” Eric looked at me, and this time, he laughed.
The guy had a dimple!
Geez. So, the monster was capable of having such people around him?
“Void has more than an army, love. Miles and I are just part of the elite–meaning we get to look him in the eye and live to tell the tale.”
I frowned, confused before the words sank in/
Oh. So, not everyone got to meet him. That would explain how he’d remained anonymous all these years.
“All done!” Eric announced when he uncovered the last plate. “Please, take a seat and help yourself. I’d love to serve you myself, but boss strictly warned me not to.”
I barely held back a scoff. “I… I can’t eat. I’m sure it’s late, and I have to go to work.”
He placed both hands on the back of a chair and leaned. “I’m more interested in the first sentence, honey. The work thing is you and the boss‘ concern, not mine.”
He circled the chair and pulled it out with a flourish. “Please. Sit. I don’t know about you, but I believe cold meals are a crime against humanity.”
I didn’t budge. “I really need to go now. Your boss knows me. It’s not like I can run away from him.”
Oh, how pathetic that sounded.
Eric sighed, lifting his head. “I’m begging you, love. Make this easy for us and take a seat. The boss was specific about you eating. If he gets back and finds untouched food, he’ll get really mad at you.”
The thought of the monster being controlling even in his absence irked me.
Grumpily, I took the seat.
“Thank you.” Eric said with a sweet smile, then proceeded to sit across from me. “Please, start eating.”
Well, I was hungry. But more than that, I didn’t want to deal with the monster throwing one of his world–ending tantrums when he got back. So, I scooped some food onto my plate, grumbling internally.
“You know, I can see why the boss is so obsessed with you,” Eric spoke through a mouthful of his Stackers that completely murdered etiquette. “You’re really beautiful, Zerali. Very beautiful.”

I didn’t bother responding. Compliments from a minion of the devil didn’t exactly butter my ego.
“If I were Void, I’d probably want to keep you myself,” he added.
I froze, fork in mid–air. “So, you’ll abduct a lady, torture and keep her against her will?”
He let out a wide smile. “We all have different ways of expressing our love, Ze. This is the boss‘ way. And if you ask say you’re lucky.”
“Excuse me?”
“A lot of women will kill to have one of the most powerful men in the world, don’t you think?”
“Seriously? So, you’ll subject your sister to a life like this?”

I’d
He rested his elbow on the table, hand propping up his chin as if pondering philosophy. “I wish I had a sister so I could relate. But I guess at the end of the day, it boils down to personal preference.”
I shook my head and angrily stabbed at my food.
“Maybe you’re right, you know?” he mused. “Maybe being loved by someone like the boss isn’t all rose and dreams. But still, being the obsession of a man like him? That’s rare. That’s… special.”
“Well, I don’t feel special,” I bit out. “Do you even know what he’s done to me? He’s been hurting my friends for years. He’s even killed some!”
“Sometimes, blood flow is an effective way to pass information across,” Miles‘ voice came up as he walked up to the table.
I turned to glare at him.
He didn’t sit but gripped the back of a chair.
Eric rolled his eyes. “Come on, asshole. Stop talking about blood when she’s eating! I understand you’re a bastard, but didn’t anyone bother to teach you basic table manners during a walk down a street?” He turned to me with softened eyes. “Ignore him, honey, and eat.”
Miles gave an amused chuckle. “Don’t fall for his charms, lady. He’s worse than I am.”
Eric’s lips parted in feigned shock as the grumpy one left. “You asshole.” He turned to me. “Don’t listen to him. I’m the saint around here.”
But somehow, I felt Miles was right. While Eric might seem friendly and considerate, you couldn’t stay close to Void without being infected.
Realizing it was pointless arguing with them, I focused on my meal.
Eric kept stirring conversations the entire time. then I realized it was oddly easy to like this guy.
Done eating, he cleared the table while I moved to stand by the window. He wouldn’t even let me step out for some fresh air -boss‘ orders.
The house looked really beautiful for someone like Void. But in the meantime, I needed to think of a way to get out of this
mess.
Was there even a way? I was stuck with The Torturer. A man who made powerful men piss themselves. Not even the cops would be able to help me on this. I was truly fucked, wasn’t I?

I watched as it glided to a halt in the middle of the yard. Two doors opened, and from the driver’s seat stepped a woman.
