“No, that’s not it.”

Oliver’s breath hitched. In the dim light of their bedroom, Patricia suddenly sensed something fierce in his eyes.

She tried to scoot away.

He caught her by the waist, drawing her close, his words low and tight with frustration. “Patricia, you’re totally trying to turn me on right now.”

Patricia wanted to scream—No way! I’m being framed! I swear I’m innocent!

“Dad, what do you think Patricia’s up to?” Nina asked. “Could there be someone pulling strings behind all this with my brother?”

Nina had just gotten home and made a beeline for Ben, needing to talk it out.

Ben sat slouched on the couch, head down, thinking hard. It took him a minute before he finally said, “I had someone look into that girl. She’s got a clean background, nothing suspicious. She’s always been focused on her studies, worked her way up. She’s not the type to pull off something like this.”

“She probably got played. If there’s someone working behind the scenes, it’s definitely more than one person.”

Nina fell silent, Jackson’s arrogant smirk popping into her head. But she honestly couldn’t figure out who’d go this far to mess with their family.

“Maybe Patricia knows something. Should I ask her tomorrow?”

“No need,” Ben said, already thinking it through. “The only ones Patricia’s up against right now are the Newtons and the Martins. If it was anyone else, she wouldn’t bother giving us a heads-up. That pretty much narrows it down.”

“So it’s either the Newton family or the Martin family.”

“The Newtons?” Nina blurted, startled.

If the Newtons were behind this, what did that say about her and Theo?

“So what now?”

“Ask your brother if he’s ever had any beef with the Martins.”
