The director was sweating bullets, stumbling over apology after apology.

“Ma’am, Ms. Martin is awake,” the housekeeper called out, her voice saving the director from total collapse.

Tina practically flew into the room, heart pounding, and found Ruby lying there, staring up at the ceiling, her eyes empty and lost.

Tears rolled down Tina’s cheeks. This was her baby. Her only daughter—her whole world.

“Ruby, sweetheart, you’re awake? Don’t scare me like that. What would I do if I lost you?”

“Ruby? Ruby, honey?”

Tina cradled Ruby’s good wrist, her hands gentle and trembling with worry.

A tear slipped down onto Ruby’s face. She blinked, her voice raspy. “Mom, did you find out who did this?”

“We’re still looking, honey, we’re still checking. I promise, as soon as we know, I’ll make them pay. Nobody gets away with hurting you.”

“Mom, my legs…” Ruby started, but stopped herself. She knew Kelly was involved. And that man—she couldn’t let him get pulled into this. If his name came out, everything she’d worked for at college would be ruined. All her dreams gone.

She wanted revenge, but she couldn’t let herself get dragged down too.

Tina waited for her to finish, but Ruby just let out a long, tired breath. Forget it. Her legs were broken, but she was still alive. As long as she could stand again someday, she’d make sure Kelly paid.

Less than an hour later, the director was back with a stack of files.

“Mr. Martin, I just checked the hospital records and compared them with the ones online. The ones online are fake.”
