Patricia didn’t really have anyone left in her life. No close family, hardly any friends—there just weren’t many people she could actually talk to these days.
With nowhere else to turn, she could only try to reach out to the Parsons family.
But even the Parsons were complicated. Her grandma had more or less shut herself off from the world after losing her daughter all those years back. She loved Patricia, sure, but there was only so much she could do; just making it through each day was hard enough.
Atticus and his wife had been living on base for ages. Atticus’s daughter was supposedly in Riverdale, but ever since she’d started at that top research institute, she’d basically vanished—there was no point even trying to get in touch.
After running out of options, Patricia finally managed to get a message to Atticus through a mutual friend.
Out in the northwest, with the wind and sand blowing everywhere, Atticus had just walked through the door and was brushing sand off his cap when his phone rang. Usually his old classmate would text, but this time, out of the blue, he called.
Atticus answered. After a few words, he froze with his hand still on the door.
He was furious, ready to blow up, but the walls in military housing were so thin that everyone would hear him yelling. So he walked inside, ignored his wife reaching out for his coat, and went straight into the bathroom, closing the door behind him.
“What do they want now? That jerk from the Shen family actually has the nerve to ask for a truce? Does he really think I won’t tell my niece to ruin his life?”
“His wife ended up in jail—she deserved it. Just because I’m out here doesn’t mean I’m clueless. I read the news. Since when do murderers get a free pass?”
“If you love playing peacemaker so much, why don’t you go convince them to kneel and apologize to my niece?”
“Now they want to talk things out? Where was all this regret when they set the fire? Seriously, you must be bored if you’re calling me about this.”
“Enough. Keep this up and we’re done being friends.”
He slammed his phone down, still seething. When he opened the door and found his wife waiting outside, his anger faded just a little.
“Hey, babe.”
