Patricia let out a laugh.
How did that saying go again? There are no forever enemies, only forever interests.
Howard, oh Howard.
You really do know how to play both sides.
She cocked her head, her voice sweet with a bite. “Did Uncle Emerson approve you telling me all this? Should I go ahead and tell him for you?”
Howard’s face instantly darkened, but Patricia didn’t stop. Her eyes were icy. “One run-in with the Newton family mess was enough for me. Howard, I hope you stay as tough as you were three years ago.”
“Patricia!” Howard started to go after her.
But a big hand shot out, blocking his way. Jackson stood there, solid as a wall.
He swore at him, accent thick. “What’s wrong with you, old man? Chasing after a young woman like that. You really think you’re something, huh?”
“Jackson!” Howard snapped, teeth clenched, wishing he could just get rid of the guy.
Jackson just grinned, not backing down. “What, you calling for your daddy now?”
***
Patricia slid into the car and let out a long sigh.
She glanced over at Jackson. “How’s Kelly holding up in prison?”
Jackson started the car and shrugged. “She’s surviving. I made some special arrangements. No one’s gonna turn down easy money, right? Howard’s too busy cleaning up his own mess to care what happens to her.”
He gave a sly smile. “Maybe they can’t mess with her openly, but there’s plenty they can do behind the scenes to make her miserable.”
Kelly’s days inside were hell.
The women she shared the cell with kept picking on her, always finding sneaky ways to make her life worse. Wetting her bed, ganging up to get her in trouble, dumping her food, getting her thrown into solitary—the list never seemed to end.
A woman who used to flaunt her luxury life had never been through anything like this.
Since she got locked up, Kelly had been falling apart, bit by bit.
