You Looked Down on Me Once, Now You Look Up. novel Chapter 348

“I figured you’d be hiding out at home all week,” Joseph said, eyeing the shopping bag in her hand. “So, went shopping?”

Nina didn’t answer him. Instead, she asked, “Why wouldn’t I go out? I didn’t do anything wrong.” She took a sip of water, cool and collected.

Joseph watched her for a moment, then let out a sigh. “Theo’s whole drama with that actress? He only did it to protect the Newtons. If he didn’t make that relationship public, there’s no way to cover up what happened with Grandma.”

“Kelly’s already in jail. If Grandma gets caught up in this too, the Newtons are done for.”

“You—”

“Are you seriously defending your best friend right now?” Nina cut him off, her eyes cold as she looked at him.

Joseph was at a loss for words. For a second, it felt like Nina had completely changed into someone else.

“How can you say that?” he said finally. “No matter what, I’m still your brother.”

“Good. Then remember that. And I don’t want to hear that guy’s name ever again.”

Joseph fell silent. Women really could change their minds in a heartbeat. Just a few years ago, she couldn’t stay away from the guy. Now, she acted like he was nothing.

“I’m in a bad mood. Come have a drink with me tonight,” Nina said, and then she headed upstairs with her bag.

She peeled off the packaging layer by layer and found a rare limited-edition designer bag inside. Patricia had even tucked the receipt in with it. Over a hundred grand for a bag—just as a business gift.

Nina remembered something she’d said once while having coffee with her friends: “There are so many people watching Patricia. Orphaned, loaded, beautiful—so what if she’s been married before? There are still plenty of people lining up for her.”

No surprise, really. Money talks.

Nina laughed softly, slipped the receipt back in the bag, and held it up to the light.

“In the end, the only thing that never betrays you is money.”
