You Looked Down on Me Once, Now You Look Up. novel Chapter 350

“Almost Christmas?” Aiden turned the words over in his mind, searching for some deeper meaning but coming up empty. It was just that—almost Christmas.

“You’re not as dense as you look,” Jackson said with a smirk. “Almost Christmas means things are about to slow down a bit.”

Aiden was still lost. “Don’t tell me Mr. Lantz is working for you.”

“Nope,” Jackson replied.

“So why would he do what we want?”

“If he took what we sent, it means he’s at least willing to talk, right?”

“And if he didn’t take it?”

“There’s always another way. All roads lead to Rome, you know?”

Aiden looked skeptical. “You can really get someone on your side with just a meal and a few nice words? That sounds way too easy.”

Jackson sighed, rubbing his forehead. “Forget what I said before. You really are hopeless.”

“A meal isn’t worth much. Isn’t there anything else going on?”

Aiden stared at him. These two had more tricks up their sleeves than he could count.

Is this how smart people always play the game? he wondered.

Brandon was having similar thoughts. After spending several days at the station, he finally made it home. No one had been there for weeks, and a layer of dust covered everything. He swept some clothes off the couch and flopped down, too tired to care.

He opened the stack of takeout containers one by one. Lion’s head meatballs, fresh greens, a steaming bowl of lamb soup—comfort food for this time of year. The plates were fancy, the food looked amazing, and it all smelled incredible. He dug in, eating quietly, and when he was done, carried the dishes to the sink to wash up.
