You Looked Down on Me Once, Now You Look Up. novel Chapter 377

Even with Grandma locked up, her instincts were as sharp as ever. After everything she’d been through, you couldn’t blame her for being on edge. One wrong move and it could all be over.

She glanced at the food box Nina brought, her words careful and measured. “What made you think of bringing your grandma a meal today?”

Nina sighed. “I was out to dinner with friends last night. We started reminiscing about the years with Theo. Honestly, I didn’t think there was much to miss—until I started thinking about you.”

“Grandma, I’m sorry. I really let you and the family down.” Nina wiped away a tear as she spoke. “I swear I didn’t do anything to the food. If you don’t believe me, I’ll eat it right here.”

“It’s smart to be careful these days,” Nina added, hurrying to open the box. She picked a bit from every dish and ate them right in front of her grandma.

Grandma had always figured Nina wasn’t exactly cunning—more like a kid who’d never quite grown up. If she’d been a little sharper, maybe she would’ve become Mrs. Newton by now.

“It’s not that I don’t trust you, sweetheart,” Grandma sighed, her voice tired. “It’s just that our family, the Newtons, never seems to get that lucky.”

They sat together, talking about the good old days, warmth and nostalgia between them. When the mood had lightened, Grandma finally picked up her fork. She made Nina eat more too, studying her face for any sign that something was off before swallowing her own bite. She wasn’t ready to let her guard down yet. She still had hope she could turn things around.

Nina, for her part, had no clue about the messy ties between the Newtons and Sean. For the week after her visit, she kept waiting for news of Grandma’s sudden death. But nothing happened. She even started to wonder if Patricia had only given her vitamins—just to see if she’d go through with it.

“Nina, what are you thinking about?”

Nina had just finished a facial at the spa and was sitting at the coffee bar, staring into her cup when her friend called her name, snapping her out of it.
