Patricia didn’t even flinch at Sean’s threats. She shot back with a calm, almost official-sounding question that shut him down cold. Her confidence was unreal, almost scary in how strong it was.
For a split second, Sean’s steady mask slipped. He stared at Patricia, realizing this girl wasn’t just beautiful—she was sharp, all edges and brains under that pretty face. No wonder Howard had warned him: Patricia was trouble. The kind you couldn't keep close. And Sean had to admit, Howard was absolutely right.
He watched her black town car disappear into the night. His assistant stepped up beside him. “Mr. Stone?”
“Let’s go to the hospital.”
All the way there, Sean kept replaying Patricia’s words: “Are you speaking for yourself, or for all the Golden Bay elite?” No one had ever dared challenge him like that. Not until Patricia.
Fine. She’d see what that meant soon enough.
At the hospital, Mrs. Newton lay motionless in her bed, her left side completely numb. She stared blankly at the ceiling, and when Sean walked in, tears started streaming down her wrinkled cheeks. She looked so small and helpless, it made Sean’s chest ache.
He gently smoothed her hair, his eyes filled with worry. Whatever problems they’d had in the past, none of it mattered now—not with time running out. Sean held her hand, squeezing her cold fingers. “Don’t worry. I’ll make things right for you.”
Outside, night had settled over the city. The street below the hospital buzzed with traffic, horns blaring in the evening rush. Patricia’s car was still crawling through the chaos, stuck in gridlock.
By seven thirty, she was still nowhere near home when Mr. Padilla called. “Are you coming back tonight?”
“Probably around nine,” she replied.
Across town, Oliver was leaning on his balcony, looking out at the city lights. The butler came over with a tray of freshly cut cigars. Oliver’s voice was gentle. “Busy tonight?”
