You Looked Down on Me Once, Now You Look Up. novel Chapter 406

He was intense, almost overwhelming at times. The more he cared, the more careful he became.

Everything Oliver did tonight came down to one thing: Patricia got hurt. He needed Theo to pay for it, but deep down he didn’t know how far he was willing to go.

Jackson nailed it with just a few words, seeing right through him.

Aiden could feel the tension crackling in the air. He moved closer to Jackson, about to say something, but Jackson stopped him.

“Go get some rest.”

Jackson took a few steps, then turned to glance at the man standing in the living room. “Mr. Padilla, everyone’s got their own lessons to learn and consequences to face. Nobody can do it for you. You helped Miss Patricia tonight, but she’ll face things like this again and again. That’s just life. The mountains we can’t climb don’t disappear just because someone helps us over them. Sooner or later, they show up again, at every twist in the road.”

“My job, my only job, is to be by her side and keep her safe. I don’t care who she’s married to. All that matters is that Miss Patricia is protected. When she’s finally out of danger, my work here is done. Whether you like me or not, whether you think I’m reckless or useless, none of that matters to me.”

Jackson made himself crystal clear.

He was here for Patricia. He would protect Patricia. As for Theo or Oliver, they just didn’t matter to him.

He didn’t care about anyone but Patricia.

Aiden’s respect for Jackson hit an all-time high tonight.

He’d always thought Jackson was just a laid-back guy, more interested in sucking on lollipops or chewing on blades of grass than anything else.

But tonight, Jackson made perfect sense.

This wasn’t just a bodyguard.

This was a philosopher.

A real philosopher.

“Hey, slow down for a second. Jackson, have you actually read any books?”

“Come on, recommend a few for me.”

“You talk circles around people, man. I’ve never seen anyone leave Mr. Padilla totally speechless before.”
